Westbound side had been done by 18:30 tonight. It's rough, but no bone-breaker (says he with the 26x2.1 tyres).

Fountainbridge was also "closed" to cars entering from Home Street/East Fountainbridge and heading towards Gardners Crescent - all traffic being funneled down Semple Street. Simple enough to get past on two wheels (though too narrow for a trike).

@nearefare - I was going West this morning and East in the evening. Maybe they've only done eastbound side, or maybe indeed I was earlier? Certainly gave me a good boneshaking and wish it had been closed or obviously signed.

you must have been earlier than me, I hit it this morning going east and it was dire, closed from the lothian road turn off this evening.

Roads Contractor Idiocy Warning
Category: Severe
Location: Fountainbridge / Gardner's Crescent roundabout replacement works

Synopsis: The contractor doing the works here has decided that today was a good day to scrape the surface of the road back to the hardcore. It was "fine" (as in, a poor attempt at a temporary surface was present) this morning. This evening it's been left in a very rough, scraped state, with c. 1 1/2" steps (no temporary tarmac ramps) on the boundary with the unscraped road surface. Manhole covers thereby standing proud of the surface by the same 1 1/2".

Big surprise to hit this section with no warning and no visible attempt to smooth the transition in and out this section. I'm sceptical that they'll manage to resurface it by end of tomorrow before snow and freeze forecast.

Dangerous in this state when you "can" see it. Wouldn't like to hit it unexpectedly with a layer of snow obscuring it.

Clever.

There is something funny going on with the Met office over Thursday.

I've been getting email warnings since Sunday.

They have a "Be prepared" status for Thursday.

The weather prediction says "Light snow shower".

I'm not sure what the message is.

I suspect I'll get the trike out again and slap some Green Oil on the chain.

It was the same this evening, too. Being on three wheels today rather than two left me few opportunities to filter because of the huge piles of snow at the side of the road, and my journey out along Comiston Road took ages. Bus passengers wouldn't have been on time, either.

The roads around the Merchiston-Bruntsfield wedge are far less treated than you might expect, too. The clear tarmac is only one vehicle wide, which makes for slow going.

Corrugated ice was the main limiting factor for me this morning. I actually started to get cold legs because I wasn't pedalling hard enough to generate heat. It was sometimes easier to drop the nearside and front wheel onto the soft snow.

Class 126. No air suspension. Manual slam-doors. Mechanical transmission. Each car produced it's own air supply so less likely for supply lines to freeze up. All-in-all hardier than the modern softie units.

The North Berwick service is Electric, but the units are stabled over in the west as there's no facilities for them in the east. So probably couldn't make it over here to ply their trade as there were iced-up diesels blocking them in. A bit like the gritters and ploughs not being able to go down roads littered with abandoned cars.

I did a spot of lunchtime googling. Current thinking is that the blame lies in the pneumatic system which in a train controls the braking and suspension (and the doors). Some units use pneumatic throttles and gearboxes too.

The air in the system will be at atmoshperic humidity. If it then freezes, ice will form in the air lines and the various check valves in the system, which effectively siezes it up and all control of the unit is lost. Once a train is up and running, it will generally keep running, it's starting them up from cold seems to be the tricky bit. Of course, they are also diesel engined and it's nearly been cold enough to freeze diesel. Big diesels apparently not the most co-operative at starting in extreme cold. A bus operator in the Borders has cancelled all services because the diesel froze overnight

So perhaps it's Scotrail's fault for not leaving all their trains idling overnight!

Subsequent inability to co-ordinate an emergency timetable service and provide passengers with reasonable information can likely be blamed on administrative failure. Or maybe the management couldn't drive in to work?

Austrian railways largely electrocuted I think (along with the lindingobanana)

Problem with working form home when remoting into virtual PCs is that most people do still work in an office and it's only the travelling sales people that get to do this on a regular basis, most managers want to keep their employees where they can see (and hear) them, have team huddles and motivational posters up around the place.
So when more people remote in than usual it slows the service down and the critical users get trouble.
If only they had a motivational poster in their home beside the router they have to reboot repeatedly...

I know when I was in Stockholm last year even funny old little lidingöbanan was running fine and it was hammering it down with snow.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObbdO5GymNw

The lidingöbanan is a world of awesome though. Maybe we need some sort of railed transport option in Embra?
