I've lost count of the number of times I've seen flashing blues lights these last few days. Someone had managed to prang their Maserati just up the road from Summerhall last night. Earlier today the missus reported an NHS van looked like it had rear-ended a car on Comiston Road, and there was a casualty being attended by paramedics in the car park at the Straiton Sainsbury's this afternoon. And that's just the incidents where we could see the emergency. At times last night Clerk Street almost seemed to be a dedicated thoroughfare for emergency vehicles - mostly headed in to town.

I think people go a bit bonkers at this time of year - the 'pressure' of the season causes some folks to disregard basic road safety, whether on foot on driving/riding. I saw a middle-aged couple set off across the the block paving in front of a departing tram at Haymarket yesterday. It was already moving and the driver was dinging his bell but they seemed oblivious/not to care. You do have to wonder...

@the canuck - it's a public holiday in Scotland too. I have no idea what this actually means, since clearly a lot of places are still open.

in most parts of canada, boxing day is a holiday, shops are closed. which i think is a fabulous idea.

Boxing Day is predicted to be the most congested day over the Christmas period, with 5.3m separate leisure journeys expected as shoppers head to festive sales.

Did I ever post about my ideas for better city governance? Basically, bloodless coup, Edinburgh becomes small city state (...well. We might want a fair chunk of the Lothians too), a Ruling Council of CCErs is drawn by some form of lottery and given ultimate power for four years at a time.

(It is true that there are a few details still to be worked out. Like what sort of robes we would get to wear, and whether or not to demand the Kingdom of Fife pay tribute.)

personally, i'd like to see schools running year round with just a couple of shorter breaks (like 2 wks at christmas and maybe two weeks in July) but with much shorter days--half days for primary and a 10am start for secondary. kids would be allowed to take holidays anytime during the year except for exams periods (two per year, followed by the holiday break).

when i rule the world.

i love the school hols, as i have to pass two of them on my commute and the parental driving is a nightmare.

George watsons business empire non - charity is closed early for Xmas. Not sure about similar businesses such as george heriots. But can this be enough to have reduced the traffic? Apparently watsons have gone with longer days and more holidays. Which is interesting. If I was given special powers I might be inclined to go with shorter days and fewer holidays....
