I can never figure out why drivers are so keen to get cyclists to wear helmets. It's no skin off their noses, or heads, whether cyclists wear them or not, so what's the idea?

Some people prefer to tell other people what to do than deal with their own imperfections (I know I do!)

@acsimpson, was watching celebrity pointless the other night (they have so many episodes in the bank that this one from 2016 not broadcast until yesterday) Which six letter words appearing in Wordworths I wandered lonely as a cloud, Blakes Jerusalem or Shelley's Ozymandias scored No points with 100 people? Some people know the first lines. Any six letter word not in the first /last/ most famous lines scored very low. Desert scored No Points.

Richard Osman said something at the end of the round like - Apart from England, Antique, ancient and daffodil ALL other six letter words scored no points.

In another round where they gave you the first and last letters of first name and surname of famous composers Lionel Bart scored way more than Cole Porter or Irving Berlin. This round was of course general knowledge and filling in the blanks.

About five mins in we started playing Guess how low some very obvious answers are going to be.

Maybe I sound elitist here? But the answers I felt were very very obvious as it was celebrity pointless not pointless (where a man I vaguely know Chas won £4500 with his son Charlie on prog rock albums of the 1970s and 1980s).

So if the countdown 100 people were asked to sit the theory exam of the driving test, how many out of 100 would pass?

I couldn't agree more with the sidelights only where there are streetlights - the oversaturation of light in built up areas creates a dazzling arms race of ever more powerful bulbs on busy roads.

I would just settle for all drivers to open their eyes and actually look and think is it safe before they make any manoeuvres.

"what if you hit a cyclist and they weren't wearing a hat and they died? It would be awful for the driver."

So if you hit a lidded cyclist and they die (which, as we know, is just as likely) that's all right then - clear conscience.

Hi vis paint for all cars. Helmets for drivers and passengers. Retesting every five years. I'm off to write a "poll" that leads participants to conclude that these are all no-brainers...

The selfish justification I heard from an otherwise reasonable human person was along the line of "what if you hit a cyclist and they weren't wearing a hat and they died? It would be awful for the driver."

@Klaxon I would also vote for less bright lights in built up areas. Sometimes when I'm heading towards strong lights, my vision is so impaired, I know drivers behind probably can't see me either.

I'd much rather all cars running on sides only in street lit areas (as is allowed by law)

Vehicles on sides only are perfectly visible so long as everyone plays by the same brightness rules, and it increases the effective visibility of every other road user.

Re hi-vis, I would settle for all motorists using the lights they already have for starters. I really can't understand why so many of them wait until it's dark before putting them on or only putting side lights on until it's practically pitch black - do they think the bulbs are going to last longer? Do they not make the connection with how difficult it is to see other vehicles that are poorly lit?

I've remembered another one - can we ban colours that allow vehicles to blend in with the road surface (how is that allowed to happen?).

If cyclists were to face the same laws as drivers, and cyclists were required by law to wear helmets and hi-vis - that would logically mean drivers would have to do so as well. Seems fair - get campaigning Mr Cox, I'm sure your fellow drivers will be right behind you.

Daily Mail

FairfuelUK founder Howard Cox said: ‘What infuriates the highest taxed motorists in the world is what they see as the lack of fairness apportioned to all road users.

‘They believe cyclists should be making some financial contribution to roads and increasing cycle lanes they currently benefit from.

‘They also want to see the compulsory use of helmets, cyclists to be road insured, wear fluorescent clothing, pass a road proficiency test and more prosecutions for the increasing episodes of dangerous cycling.’

That would be enough to stop me cycling altogether, which might be the point.
