The disposal presents an opportunity for NHS Lothian to knit this large site into the fabric of the surrounding area.

Astley Ainsley consultation:

https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/sfc/astley-ainslie/

Closes today (13th Sept 2019)

It would be tragic if the rights-of-way were merely ordinary roads with no specific cycling or walking facilities...

As such, I will be submitting at least the following:

- Cycling and walking routes along the rights-of-way to be high-quality; traffic free; convenient; contiguous; intuitive to follow; free from obstructions; and safe for ages 8 to 80 to ride unaccompanied.
- Cycle and pedestrian cross-traffic to replace motor-traffic.
- Low-traffic to be designed-in, i.e. through-motor-traffic is prevented by permanent physical measures (buses allowed as through-traffic, if applicable).
- The entire site designed around walking & cycling, with motor traffic seen as guests.
- Parking to be limited to essential users only. The housing should include car-free living areas.
- A bus service to be reinstated near or through the site to connect to local amenities.
- Parkland, play parks and open space areas to be created.
- Mature trees to be preserved and protected, before, during and after development.
- A safe route to school through the site to be maintained during construction.
- Any housing on the site should consist mainly of medium-density housing, suitable for a diverse mixture of residents including families, the elderly, etc.
- Local amenities to be included (to reduce the need for travel): at minimum a convenience store and ideally a doctor’s surgery, pharmacy and space for other independent stores.

Statements to the effect of the above should be written into the “Place Brief” to ensure compliance by the developers.

Cycled through there today, coincidentally. Used the exit down to Egypt Mews, someone had cleared all the leaves from the path making a very pleasant cruise down.

It would be fantastic (and somewhat surprising, tbh) if the community group manage to pull this off.

Its a big site, and you can see developers salivating about it (in the same way as happened in the site off Glenlockhart Road, opp Merchants golf course).

I have never known the Egypt Mews ("Boiler House Entrance") to be closed. It does also provide access to a house so it seems unlikely that it would be closed.

I rather like using it as a through route (particularly heading west, i.e. down the steep bit) as it is a way of dodging the section of undulating tarmac on Braid Avenue.

“I'm not sure if it's still unlocked, though.”

Shut for some time. Think ‘irresponsible dog walkers’ was the justification.

“There's another entrance and footpath (street lit) off Egypt Mews, but I don't use it regularly enough to know if it's always open.”

Haven’t been for a while either, expect it to be still open/useable.

Path surface on steep slope improved some time ago. Room to provide a better graded zigzag, but...

There is a pedestrian entrance on South Oswald Road that's never closed. Look for Edinburgh Headway Group on Google Maps. Further east, there's a gate/door in the stone wall that friends of ours used to go through on their way to/from Gillespies. I'm not sure if it's still unlocked, though.

There's another entrance and footpath (street lit) off Egypt Mews, but I don't use it regularly enough to know if it's always open.

@algo I think there might already be an entrance on S Oswald rd, but it's either shut or too difficult to find/navigate.

Your idea is sensible, and I agree entirely re Kilgraston. We stay closer so not an issue, but a number of my son's pals have to negotiate it daily - it's too fast, the pavement too narrow, and as a safe cycling route towards kings buildings is a joke.

@nedd1e_h and I were discussing the possibility of making cycling and walking route through the Astley Ainslie from the North Gate to one on South Oswald Road (not exactly sure where).

Unfortunately I couldn't make this meeting, but there is quite a big demand for a safe route to school to Gillespie's from the Blackford area and a traffic-free route through here would be a brilliant start. Many folk say it's too dangerous for their kids to walk or cycle to school and so drive (understandably as Kilgraston is a nightmare).
