I wouldn't quibble it's a bike but I think it bears the same relationship to bicycles as Neanderthals do to modern humans i.e. A dead end.

Interestingly this week I saw a very good exhibition in Walthamstow (NE London) about JK Starley at the Vestry House Museum. It was claimed that Starley "invented" the modern bicycle in 1885. There's some truth in that as the example on show was definitely a bicycle. My own word would have been "developed" rather than "invented", but he was a local boy, so poetic licence?

http://vestryhousemuseum.org.uk/whats-on/no-ordinary-bicycle-john-kemp-starley-two-wheeled-revolution/

I'd say a bicycle has to have a driven wheel, but what do I know? It's a lovely dandy-horse to me.

i thought the same thing when I clicked on the link, but it's got two wheels, if not chain drive or pedals. given etymology of 'bicycle', I'm inclined to say that 2 wheels is the determining feature?

"The 199-year-old bike was originally made by Denis Johnson who registered a patent for the bike in 1818.

Johnson made 320 of the machines in 1819 with only 12 known to be in existence today.

It is believed by Mr Stockdale that this barn find is the oldest of the dozen as Johnston would number his bikes, but this particular machine was made pre-numbering strongly suggesting it was one of the first to be built."
