I say I've been lucky, but really I've just had what should be the ordinary uneventful life of a person who uses a bike to get around.

A sentiment I would amplify a million times. Glad you're OK.

Thanks for the advice and good wishes @algo.

This is the first time I've had this kind of incident so I've been pretty lucky so far. I think my eyes were left scanning the row of parked cars for possible dooring threats, as I usually do.

I say I've been lucky, but really I've just had what should be the ordinary uneventful life of a person who uses a bike to get around. I've been unlucky this time, it shouldn't be the norm, but unfortunately for too many it's a fearscape out there that causes stress and stops too many from the joy and freedom a simple bicycle can bring.

@paulmilne - I hope you are recovering ok - sounds nasty. Adam McVey has his heart in the right place I think - I'd say you might be better off writing to the entire transport and environment committee:

@dougal, he is not up to the standard of previous council leader but he does want to get out more and pop is his wake up call. He has given up the council car for lent and now only smokes on the odd occasion, e.g. He was outside Hive last Saturday taking a breather from his dancing and Mhairi Black offered him a Camel Light ( I have made this up)

It wouldn't be a CCE thread without a little drift!

Thanks for your kind thoughts. A bit stiffer this morning, right leg has a bruise, but remarkably I'm pretty ok. Usually when i come off my bike i manage to hurt one or more wrists but they are undamaged this time.

@gembo I'll cc Adam Mcvey and not mention the state of his bike.

@gembo Is he? Whenever he's joined us on the POP feeder it appears his bike's not been outside for some time.

Edit: Thread drift in 3. Sorry Paul!

@paulmilne, bad one, hope you are OK. Why not go with Adam McVey the council leader, keen cyclist and committed to the ten per cent spend unlike the Tories.

So, tonight I was cycling my usual commuting route from the West to Waverley. I had come through Randolph Place, around WRH and on to Charlotte square. Counterclockwise to get over to George Street. Row of parked cars on the north side of the square, then the cycle lan, then a row of stationery eastbound traffic heading up to the lights.

I was cycling quite slowly and just as well as a westbound car was inching through a gap in the westbound cars to get to a parking space on the inside of the cycle lane.

I just had time to clock the bonnet coming through the cars and touch my brakes before I bounced off it. Bike went over into the empty space and I went down to a couple of scraped shins.

The driver reversed out and parked across the street. Lots of people crowded around to make sure i was all right, including the driver, jut a young guy. I felt fine, the bike seemed okay, and the crowd melted away as it became obvious there was no harm done.

I got the driver's phone number. His hand was shaking as he keyed it into my phone.

It could have been so much worse but it needn't have happened at all if the cycle lane had been on the inside of the parking lane. There was a line of traffic blocking both of our views and i don't blame him, but as usual the conflict is baked into the shoddy street design.

I shall be writing to the transport convenor with my story. And suggesting the simple solution of cycle lanes inside parking lanes. Any suggestions of who i should copy in?
