“Focus on quality of life issues, and the rest will look after itself.”

I agree, but I don’t know if it’s true!

Requires a level of belief and ‘we’re all in it together’ action like for “Indy’, ‘Brexit’, Climate Change, etc...

Not entirely (un)related -

“

Maplin was reported to be in talks with Edinburgh Woolen Mill over a sale

‘Big retail’ in some trouble. Unlikely to be replaced by small retail (though past predictions of ‘peak coffee shop’ were premature).

Fewer shops, no tents, what is to become of Ed??

I chose Edinburgh from a grainy black and white aerial photo of Arthur's Seat in a geology textbook I stumbled on when I was twelve.

I always quite liked the look of Victoria Street in the few frames of chase sequence in Restless Natives but it had no bearing on my UCAS selections and subsequent long-term habitation.

An unprecedented clampdown is to be ordered on the staging of shows, festivals and events in public spaces in Edinburgh city centre in the wake of complaints about over-crowding, over-commercialism and disruption for local residents.

When The Bruce was filming at Craigmillar Castle the whole affair landed like a space ship. The security guys were from Newcastle and Glasgow. Economic benefit to Craigmillar: zero of your Earth pounds.

See also; Turd, Golden and the minimum wage.

I'm not sure how much gets spent locally during filming - I suspect that things like catering and accommodation are probably pre-booked and so profits drop into the coffers of national chains, although there's the positive aspect of actual local employment to consider. And I'm sure taxis and pubs do ok out of it for a few weeks. But by far the bigger benefit is from the subsequent tourism - a few hundred film-makers being here for a few weeks is nothing compared with potentially tens of thousands of tourists who just might choose to visit and spend their money locally in subsequent years due to liking the look of it in a film.

Thought it was time to have a thread on ‘economic benefit’.

Plenty mentions of ‘successful economy’ , not enough house, too many commuters, ‘X new jobs because of Y development, etc

Today’s claim -

“

Edinburgh Avengers filming doubled value to city’s economy

“

https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/entertainment/edinburgh-avengers-filming-doubled-value-to-city-s-economy-1-4697156

Good/bad/irrelevant?

Benefits outweigh disbenefits??

Any actual extra money that gets spent in the city?

For films set in Ed/Scotland generally, many claims (and visible reality in places like Culross) of tourism increase.
