The "traditional" start of Edinburgh's Christmas celebrations involves a pile of shipping containers on the Lawnmarket in the middle of November? Wow, I gave up even the slightest pretence of understanding fashions years ago - now it seems I can't even keep up with traditions.

Maybe it actually is to be a reconstructed Netherbow. I mean, Tower Bridge in London is just a self-supporting steel frame underneath all that fancy stone cladding.

“

The Cockburn believes that there are multiple, systemic failures in the governance and management of this proposals. We state again, the Cockburn recognises the value to the City of such events such as the Christmas Market but has significant concerns about creep of commercialisation in our public parks and places. The structure erected here is so grossly out of keeping with previous events and is so incongruous in scale that it destroys the very character of the city which the operators are trying to exploit.

A fundamental, independent review is required. We hope that our Civic Leaders understand that Edinburgh is not their plaything to do with what they will, and that public regulatory processes apply as much to them and their contractors as to the rest of us.

What is a respectful way to treat memorial benches if you are moving them for this Xmas tatt fest/? If the one that was on its side hadn’t fallen over it would maybe have looked ok???

Parks dept employees wear white gloves. Each bench is carefully lifted and transported in bubble wrap and cushioned van to the memorial bench resting warehouse which is heated and ventilated. Each day the park dept white gloved employee spray on the pledge and give a light dusting?

Don’t wish to inflame this.

There’s risk, risk, probabilities, reasonable precautions, reasonable paranoia, and ‘if people don’t talk about things and they won’t happen’ denialism.

In context -

I was at a planning meeting on Monday for an event happening on November 5th which is “well advertised” and “attracts thousands of people”.

Someone asked some ‘what if’ questions. The room went quiet.

The event isn’t cancelled, there’ll be no concrete blocks or armed police.

Lots of parking cones and parking restriction enforcement planned - to reduce the chaos caused by people who expect to drive everywhere and park anywhere.

On the day of the Grenfell Tower report it’s worth reflecting on danger and randomness and vested interests.

Life involves considering relativity and proportionality.

If we're banning structures which can have crowds on or near them then we will have lots of space for cycle lanes very soon.

I thought @neddie made a perfectly valid (if slightly paranoid) criticism of inviting crowds of people to linger on an improvised platform.

No. I am not sure why you brought it up as a subject at all. We are all concerned about the creeping monopoly of public spaces for private endeavour, and risk of terrorism was your first suggestion? The risk is not peculiar or limited to the way the Christmas market is built.

The relevance is that a terrorist could easily plant a bomb under all the scaffolding that has been illegally built as a Chgristmas market, as mentioned in this same thread here: http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=18668&page=2#post-316458

The scaffolding would allow such a bomb to be concealed underneath, much more so than would be the case than if the market had been built on the flat on a street.

Or do people think Edinburgh is somehow immune from terrorism?

Is that clear enough now?

What would stop a terrorist planting some device under all the scaffolding?

Could be easily hidden.
