From the Spurtle:

---

Leith Street will close to motor traffic again, this time for three weeks, from 7pm on 5 May till 7am on 25 May.

Briefer weekend disruptions are expected in June.

Laing O’Rourke, the contractor building the new Edinburgh St James Quarter, says the closure will stretch from Waterloo Place to Greenside Row. Greenside Row will remain open. Calton Road will close.

Most previous traffic diversions will return, but an Abbeymout gyratory will not be repeated as it takes too long to install and remove. Easter Road traffic-light filters will be adjusted.

Pedestrians will be able to pass via a short-term covered walkway. Cyclists will have to dismount over a 25–30m stretch.

---

I was on that route about 3.30pm after buying the pastel de natas for the troops from Casa Amiga, it was not bad yesterday, la favorita only double parked, got through the lights on the bike bypasses, was nearly taken out on the roundabout which was clogged and car driveer fancied moving into my lane, peds were all over the crossing at Calton Road but I waited patiently, from there I would have gone through shacks, down moray house, up through the park then round.

I can't stand the bridges or any of that shit

Rode up and down the Quality Bike Improvement Corridor, city centre and Leith Walk for a meeting yesterday.

Absolutely hopeless. Apart from the 75 segregated metres on Buccleuch Street and the wand-segregation downhill on Leith Walk the rest of the 'bicycle infrastructure' was neutral or actively counter-productive.

In my world the work I do is criticised and tested by people who get paid to find fault with it. Must be wonderful to know you can just sling a handful of filth at the street and declare the job done.

The idea that the law only applies to those lacking the chutzpah to ignore it could have some quite unfortunate consequences.

Short of sticking the lorry across the gates of 10 Downing Street green lane plus cycle lane plus double reds plus pavement is surely as forbidden as parking places come? Be interesting to know what Greggs make of this and their hilariously litigious employee.

I've given up even mentioning the fact that there's a cycle lane there, really. The council has made it clear they're not interested in enforcing parking in it, so I just ignore it and treat it as part of the parking / loading bays.

@IWRATS: Yeah, that's what made me give up and leave - I realised he seemed to be under the impression that he and every other delivery driver has to park on the pavement in order to do his job, and it's that or not make his deliveries.

Having been up and down Leith walk daily for the past couple of weeks, Greggs in he morning and the pizza shops in the evening are both (by a shocking margin) the worst offenders.

Enforcement of illegal parking at either of those shops would go along way to improving the safety of Leith Walk.

I reckon camera enforcement of bus lanes should be fairly straightforward to get right (with multiple cameras).

1 read of a plate == no action
>2 reads of a plate within a certain time period == fine

That avoids the problem of people briefly driving through the bus lane to access a driveway or make a turn. It would possibly even allow deliveries (if loading is allowed in the bus lane) if one required each plate read to be from a different camera within a short time frame.

"I think camera enforcement would work too. But last time they tried it I think they got into a lot of trouble with over zealous software fining people for going into driveways."

I think this was just a teething problem, it's been running fine for years now in the few locations where there are cameras. Wouldn't be a problem on Leith Walk (although the parking spaces can be legally accessed the whole time so actually that would probably be harder to deal with than driveways!) As far as I know each ticket is human-reviewed before being sent.

Unfortunately, camera enforcement of parking offences is currently illegal in Scotland. An amendment for the pavement parking bill?

I think you need a human element to it, like a traffic warden reviewing footage for an hour to double check instances.

Alternatively you could make an app for it and use public enforcement. It would be easy for an app to capture location and time.

Camera enforcement of bus lanes is the only way forward. ANPR system issuing penalty notices to transgressors ought to put a stop to it pretty quickly. Either that or the Council will rake in a lot of money from penalty charges.

I'll move it again if it's there when I pass this evening. Each time I have to move it, it's getting moved further and further into the traffic lane ;)

Sadly the sign that Edinburgh Cycle Cam moved last night is now back in its original place (why??) this morning.

@IWRATS That's the 'rigidly enforced' parking restrictions we were promised when we predicted that the new cycle lanes & bus lanes would be free car-parking lanes when the revamped LW re-opened.

Rigidly unenforced, more like. Active bus lanes & cycle lanes full of parked cars (even the on-pavement lanes often have cars parked in them) & no-one giving a damn. It's a disgrace.

There was a nice vid of Edinburgh Cycle Cam on Twitter last night removing a 'Lane closed' road-sign from the segregated LW cyle lane last night and putting it on the road where it belonged ;-)

Took a bus down Leith Walk for the first time since Leith Street opened.

If that's giving priority to public transport I dread to think what a free for all would look like.

Wild West parking, green lanes just not functioning, cycle lanes dug up, parked on, full of pedestrians. Took an hour to get from Liberton to the Shore. Not much above walking pace.
