Couldn’t find the bike shops thread so resurrected this one which I deem as Classic CCE

Just to opine that there is a great wee bike shop in Douglas next to a truly magnificent bakery.

cycle Wrx is the name. Fraser runs it, he is up in Edinburgh today for the start of the Gumball Rally.

I bought a treacle scone and a coffee. I then bought two more treacle scones to take to my mum in Ayr. Total cost £4.60

I then went to the cycle shop to buy a tube, thinking Fraser will have to charge a lot for a tube given the rent in the shop, location etc. he said three pounds please. I said in that case I will take two. These are the exact same tubes I bought in my favourite Edinburgh bike shop last week for £11. I’m not doing this right am I said Fraser.

Ok 37 miles from Balerno but can be on very quiet roads though I also found NCN route 74 due to slight wrong turn. I was a bit further above Happendon Services than I had meant. Met some Australians cycling from Bristol to Glasgow, stopped to let them by. One asked if it was much of a detour to new Lanark. I said hmm, five or six miles but you will have a huge hill to climb to return to this route. Seemed satisfied that she wasn’t going to push for the detour. I said if you knew where you were going you could get to Cora Linn without the hill. Or get lost forever in South Lanarkshire.

Big easterly blew me to Ayr in record time.

Dura Ace front mech for 99p, thanks to eBay. I'd forgotten about Eastside, and BJ Bikes in Porty. But Ace in M'burgh came up with six oversize ferrules today. Staff there disagreeing over whether Shimano will go wireless for the next 105 groupset. You don't get that on eBay. I still have a gift voucher for EBC so I'll go there for some bits though I've been promised a barrel adjuster via this forum - result!

If you're not in a rush, fleaBay is your friend. If you need the stuff urgently, a bike shop (I recommend Eastside Bikes personally) is better.

When I have built things up in the past I found that SJS Cycles online have a good selection of this stuff and are generally pretty quick at getting things in the post.Their on line shop has a section entitled nuts and bolts or something similar.

Matt at Just Bike Repairs in JuninGreen has a lot of old spare parts. Could not guarantee you would get everything but he would probably let you rummage for a fixed fee?

Tis a long way from home but worth a visit. Note he opens officially 8 until 2 on a Saturday. So that means 2-8 on Fridays, 8-2 Thurs 2-8 Wednesday's, 8-2 Tues. closed Monday and Sunday.

Thanks for all the advice. The shops I've tried for random parts (BicycleWorks and Ace Bikes) have both been great, giving me bits from their parts bins at no charge. But it would feel awkward returning with a long list. It's hard to get to the Bike Station on a part-assembled bike*. So I'll have to get back onto the Internet.

* I do have other bikes but I'd want to use their workshop and tools and make use of their advice.

For generic nuts and bolts Murray's tool store used to be my shop of choice although I haven't been since they moved out of town. You can get a selection from most hardware shops though, even the national shed chains.

However if you want bike specific variants (eg brake rotor bolts) you'd be better with a bike shop. I know Evans will sell you some workshop spares. It would also be worth asking your local bike shop if they have them in stock and would be willing to sell them to you.

Is there a shop in Edinburgh that stocks M5, M6 and other sized bolts, cable outer end caps, cable crimp ends, brake pivot bolts, inline gear barrel adjusters and the other miscellaneous things you need when building a bike? Or is that handled by eBay these days?
