Thanks all. I've found Newington Road to be a bit slower than Causewayside/Summerhall, which is the reason I normally go that way, but I think @IWRATS' way is probably better to suggest for a start.

@Roibeard - have invited.

It's my route into town with the kids.

On my own, I'd stick with Mayfield Gardens to West Preston Street, then right and left into North Meadow Walk. The bus lane (usually unparked) makes it relatively straightforward.

With the kids, I turn off earlier at West Mayfield, across to Fountainhall Road, and right into Lauder Road (Hatton Place, Argyle Place, Middle Meadow Walk). However I've had more close passes on Lauder Road so some here have suggested some of the smaller side streets.

The latter route can be narrowed by parked cars on both side, with limited opportunities to overtake safely, but it seems less of a long drag than the main road.

As above, I tend to avoid the "quality" bike corridor.

Get them to join us for the PoP feeder!

Robert

@bruce_mcadam

I'll come home that way quite often. On the way in, less so.

I used to commute Gilmerton Road -> Craigmillar Park -> left onto Mentone Gardens -> variations to either Regulas Road or St. Albans Place (depending on traffic) -> S. Lauder Road -> Hatton Place -> Argyle Place -> Middle Meadow Walk -> Forrest Road -> George IV Bridge.

Gilmerton Road, Minto Street, Hope Park Terrace, Meadows, cross to Forest Road on red, George IV Bridge.

Minto Street is largely trouble-free in my experience, the QBiC is nothing but trouble.

Someone who lives near me and who knows I cycle a lot asked me this morning what I thought the best route into town was.

My own advice would be: Gilmerton Road, Mayfield Gardens, Gray St, Causewayside, Meadows, Forrest Road, George IV Bridge.

Any dissenting opinions? Going via the Innocent is an option, but it adds a mile each way and involves a bit more faff in a few places.
