Seven Hills race is on the 17th of June - they'd better be finished or there will be four hundred maniacs running through their building site.

The long awaited work to widen the path from Allan Park to Craiglockhart Road North is scheduled to happen 8-16 June.

[ This is the path known as the ‘Tramway’ which runs over the canal and connects to it; then up the hill to Craiglockhart Rd N. It’s already tarmac’ed, but rough and narrow ]

Thanks for all the advise. I think we will take Greenroofers suggestion. We will be escorting some of our Hermiston riders back as well.

I feel sorry for that Rover P5 Coupe. It's on SORN, but will no doubt just sit and gradually decay, while reminding said old folks of their younger days.

Routewise, I'd agree with Morningsider. It's a route I use a lot heading east; I dislike the aqueduct intensely for its aspect ratio and poor surface.

Coming off the towpath after meggetland the route takes in the about to open Old folks home. Do look out for the butcher's bike, the old 3 litre rover, the fake petrol pump and the large plastic butcher.

@Roibeard LOL.

In this case, is it not more likely that child will a) throw the panda in the canal or b) fall in the canal iself?
;-)
I'm sure the small BikeTrains are Way Too Sensible to do such a thing...

This dilemma made me (mostly) conquer my fear of the aqueduct. Previously I'd go Morningsider's route. (Pavement use is entirely excusable with kids in tow IMO)

@Fimm - Ah, I've seen this problem before. Isn't there an issue that if you leave the panda on it's own, it will eat the child? Or is it the other way round? There's usually a solution if you make a couple of journeys and only leave inedible things together...

The shortest route I can think of is this
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=7228425
but traffic-free it is not!

Actually, this might be better, and I suppose small people can cycle on the pavements...
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=7228427

Park bike. Leave sutiable small BikeTrain to look after bike. Carry trailer and panda across aqueduct, accompanying other small BikeTrain, who can look after them while you return and collect bike and other child.

Seriously, I think that's probably going to be easier than any other route - otherwise go back to Hermiston Gait and access the towpath from there!

Tricky - I would come off the canal here:

https://goo.gl/maps/raY3GPcW2LF2

Follow the path down to Slateford station and then out to Slateford Road. Stick to the pavements (excusable with kids here, as it's pretty horrible) along Slateford/Lanark Road and then cross and head down Inglis Green Road. Then turn left at Redhall Drive and through the park (Kincroft Side) which will take you back up to the towpath without any steps or real need to dismount.

After Last year's POP I made the mistake of trying to get a borrowed trailer, complete with Panda, over the Slateford Aqueduct. Lets just say I only just got away with it, but scrapped some of the paint from the overriders. Had s trailer wheel had slipped off it would have been a major hassle get panda, trailer and bike out of the canal. This year I will be escorting MiniBikeTrain, MidiBikeTrain and the Panda in a trailer from Meadows back to Hermiston. We will use the canal for most of the route but looking at how to avoid the Aqueduct.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
