"...perhaps they can charge more money that way..."

It couldn't be, could it...?

Filled it in, in the hope that it discourages "totems on the ground" from being "more sticks in the footway creating more pinch-points" and that clouds of tourists are not encouraged to stand and peer at things where they would be in the way of normal movement.

We (OpenStreetMap) did send someone over to one of their sessions, they (the consultants) seemed fixed on creating a whole new set of brand new maps from scratch rather than using OSM which already has everything and more they could want, because it's not "up to date" (really!)... or perhaps they can charge more money that way...

Why do we need a "comprehensive and consistent Wayfinding system"?

There are too many signs all over the UK explaining everything away. Most people have mobile devices which will inform them where key attractions are, and so on.

Heaven forbid that a few tourists might lose their way and have to take in unexpected surroundings or ask a local resident for directions. There's something to be said for not always knowing exactly where you are at all times...

More consultations within a day of further projects being put on ice due to lack of funds for implementation?

I’m more concerned about

“

There have been a number of workshops with stakeholders to develop
the concept and create a new licence-free mapping resource.

“

Both that process (keeps consultations in well paid work, when ‘no money’ for doing stuff) and apparent need for more maps - Google and OSM (and OS) have most things covered.

One very simple system is used by Forestry Commission - first experience in QE Forest Park all routes to point x were a paint mark in the same colour, points y z etc in other colours - so basically wherever you picked up a core route you followed the appropriate colour...

Leicester did this in 1980's with the Great Central Way & River Soar route placing bands of coloured tape around lamp posts and sign posts. I did this in a very effective way also, with 2" wide 3M pink Dayglo tape just in 4-6" vertical strips on lamp posts - lasted for years until proper signs (NCN) went up and visible from 50 metres away in daylight.

“
Edinburgh Wayfinding -Phase 3

For Edinburgh, the ambition is to create a comprehensive and consistent
Wayfinding system across multiple channels which will promote active
travel and encourage the wider exploration of the City as part of the
managing growth agenda.

There have been a number of workshops with stakeholders to develop
the concept and create a new licence-free mapping resource.
