A different sort of balance -

“

“A pro-bicycle plan must have some anti-car measures” - Filip Watteeuw

Ghent took this approach a step further by enlarging the city’s pedestrian area and creating six distinct sections with no automobile accessibility between them without using the ring-road.

“is that NR is basically trying to catch up with years of neglect of its lineside environment due to under-funding, and to get the management of its estate (the prime purpose of which is to allow trains to run safely and on time) back under control“

@chdot: What isn't stated in that article, or any of the others that the Grauniad has been punting on this topic, is that NR is basically trying to catch up with years of neglect of its lineside environment due to under-funding, and to get the management of its estate (the prime purpose of which is to allow trains to run safely and on time) back under control.

I've heard it said that, way back in the mists of time when steam was the almost universal source of motive power on the railways, a significant amount of lineside vegetation control occurred as an accidental byproduct of running up and down the lines machinery that regularly emitted sparks from its chimney and dropped embers from its grate as part of its normal operation.

"The aim is not to transform a driver into a cyclist or a pedestrian; such a notion is absurd. The aim is to have a person choose to get in their car less often."

However, Mr Donnelly says if parts of the city like the High Street are suffering, the problem should not be ignored. “Let’s work out how we help that. Our approach at Marketing Edinburgh is everything has to be in balance between residents, businesses and visitors – if any one part of that triangle is pulled too far in one direction the city’s soul is lost. That’s what happened in Amsterdam and Barcelona, it went too much to the visitor economy and you got residents really kicking back.”

The status quo is massively imbalanced in favour of the car. Creating true balance means reducing space for motor vehicles.
