He's probably telling the truth.

I dated a German. Her family came to visit and we all went for a walk.

After they'd seen my cross a couple of roads (who needs a green man?), I think they concluded I was some sort of criminal.

@sallyhinch this is probably the place to tell a funny story I read on Facebook...

It requires a bit of context - there is a race called the "Highland Fling" which has for some unknown reason spawned the phrase "Ding ding Highland Fling" which in turn has lead to the tradition that if you spot someone wearing Highland Fling branded race kit you should say "Ding ding" to them. Mr fimm thinks it is silly, but there you go.

So, our cyclist had got into a bad interaction with someone about using or not using their bell, and cycled off grumpily. Whereupon, after a while, a runner coming the other way cheerfully called "Ding ding" to them. The cyclist, still grumpy, nearly told them to "<rule 2> off", but fortunately didn't say anything out loud. Because they then realised (you've probably already worked this out) that they were wearing their Highland Fling hoody...

Turned to give a very rude gesture to the 4x4 that had hooted at me and was then hanging just behind my shoulder. Realised just in time it was a neighbour saying hello and converted it into a cheery wave

A guided cycle tour in Berlin was what got me back into cycling. I'd recommend it.

A friend at work who I keep trying to encourage to cycle is just back from Berlin where he joined a guided cycling tour. He was very taken with it. The guide who was American explained that the Berliners are rule bound and if the lights change to green they interpret this as an imperative to Go, regardless of what might be in their way. I took this as the guides crafty way of ensuring all of his charges stopped at the red light

The sound is usually a prelude to dog's abuse* unless you instantly rush to the side of the road through pot-holes, puddles, or whatever else was forcing you out of the gutter. Happens regularly, especially on narrow roads.

This certainly seemed to be the view of the van driver who sounded the horn behind me several times as I cycled along Stevenson Drive on Saturday afternoon. I held my primary position, but increasingly nervously, and they eventually managed to pass me when there was a gap in the oncoming traffic. I notice on Google Streetview that this is a 30 mph speed limit road and that there is a bus and partial cycle lane heading east, but zero provision heading west, which seems disappointing given the width of the road. I would have been cycling through the park if it was open.

"AN ARISTOCRAT who sold a Turner masterpiece for £30 million has escaped with just six penalty points and a £400 fine after driving his Land Rover into a rambler on his estate."

"The earl was originally charged with dangerous driving and leaving the scene of an accident. However, the charge was reduced to driving without due care and attention, which carries a maximum £5,000 fine, while an allegation that he "did knowingly fail to stop his vehicle" was dropped"
