Bike packing bags on the front? And a frame pack? I'm easing into it?

Do panniers count as bikepacking? I have always been led to believe not.

I would like to attend any bike packing coffee or beer supported discussions. I am now 50% bike packed - panniers on the back.

My Capital Trail bike set up.

Capital Trail bike

Mix of old school audax style and new fangled bike packing. Carradice Barley saddlebag on the back, pair of Alpkit stem cells, and an Alpkit Kanga handlebar harness holding drybag. Drybag contains bivvi bag, compact down jacket, and inflatable sleeping mat. Sleeping liner, tools, spare socks and top etc in saddle bag.

The Capital Trail is doable on a cross bike in reasonably dry conditions, but I think I'd want a mountain bike if I was to go round again. The full version includes red grade trails at Innerleithen and Glentress.

I cycled between the A701 to the B7076 yesterday afternoon after the A701 was closed with no notice (I was already miles in to it when it closed) due to a crash fatally and would be 20 miles detour otherwise. I was on my journey home from kirkbride airfield with tent. Those borders routes look nice. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Moffat/@55.4249128,-3.5651644,14z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x487d4ddafd1799d7:0x50d64f52cc01614!8m2!3d55.335208!4d-3.440337

When a river in the way i have carried my bike a couple of times and just have normal bag. I cycled some trail routes last summer. A power pack is important i think as with no electric if away for a few days need lights and phone. Possibly a spare tyre in case tyre splits. Also a spare light so can charge one while using the other if travelling at night

decided this just about merited a new thread so as not to dilute the Overnight Capables thread.

Has anyone done either of The Capital Trail or The Reiver Raid ?

I really want to do one (both) of these, and apart from a few essential items of kit (tent, sleeping bag, Garmin, things I don’t yet know I need & a way to fasten all this to the bike) plus a free weekend, I think I am almost all set.

My possibly over-inflated sense of preparedness comes from the knowledge that I cant imagine it’ll be any harder the doing West to East through the Cairngorms and fording the thigh-high Feshie (can it ?)

Also – any bikepackers wishing to swap advice for coffee @ not-PY or beer @ yet-to-be-arranged, please do let me know.
