Agree - is nonsense. Place was parked out a week ago when I went by with charity tricyclist. Actually quite hostile for cyclists as parked up all the way up towards roundabout.
I actually spoke to council in presence of the owner Eddie 18 months ago to tell them that racks were required. Might be my fault ;-)

It's pretty sickening given CEC Parks installed outdoor exercise equipment in the same locus (and which I have never seen being used, incidentally) which has much more visual impact/sharp edges/cost than a few Sheffield stands.

@Gibbo Nail on head, etc. That's fundamentally the cause of much of the difficulty getting CEC to facilitate cycling and active travel more broadly. "Normal people don't do it." Or if they do, it's because they are too incapable or too young or too poor to drive a car and SURELY would prefer to drive if only they could.

"Last time I was there I just parked my bike next to my table...."

Here's the thing: the council doesn't regard cycling as transport.

Normal families don't go to Cramond by bike. Normal families go by car.

So there's a free car park and no bike parking.

That's it.

It's not oversight. It's not to protect short-sighted runners who might collide with stationary objects. And, at Silverknowes/Cramond it's obviously not because the prom is narrow.

It's because, in the council's world, normal people don't cycle.

@IWRATS

I have run several thousand urban miles in my life without ever colliding with a bike rack.

When I lived in Davidsons Mains, I often cycled along the prom from Cramond to (usually) West Shore Road.

Each time, I'd have to negotiate my way round children running around, untrained dogs off the leash etc...

Not once, did I hit them. Nor did I hit any stationary objects.

And I was going faster than a runner...

The whole thing is ridiculous.

So the Council has money to install racks, there is plenty of space to do so at this location and the Council's policy is to "Continue programme of installing bike parking in response to requests." - page 24, Active Travel Action Plan.

In addition, the Edinburgh Waterfront Promenade Design Code indicates that new street furniture should be added to the Cramond section of the promenade. It isn't made clear what this might be, but cycle racks are street furniture.

So - what is going on here?

Only four out of twenty have bike racks on OSM. Admittedly, OSM is probably missing some, but I am amazed and appalled at how poor this is.

I'm pleased for him that he both had a table and could leave his bike next to it. Now, back to the point in hand, why are there no bike racks in a park popular with cyclists, Mr Key? If Porty prom has space, that is not the issue.

I'm sure there used to be some Sheffield racks on the eastern part of the prom, by the picnic tables which are near the junction with the Silverknowes branch of the prom as it heads inland. At least that was the case 7 years ago (when I last used them). Can't recall if they're still there or not.

It is nonsensical that there are no bike racks down there. The council are ignoring the idea of bikes as transport to get there to then wander along the beach and do all the other things not-cyclists do.

OK, so back on topic for a moment. Its not an area I frequent much, but I agree on the sentiment.

I have been pushing QMile to put racks in sensible / covered places near my gym - but as a private entity they have just been blanking me.

Presumably the council cant get away with that tactic - Is there anything we can do to influence, i.e. contact specific cycle friendly people on council?

Maybe worth a small campaign.
