Thanks for all the offers and advice.

Whilst spending upwards of 2.5 hours in the shop (owner keen on vaping) I spotted Wingpig and the Andy and Sandy (les kaputniques).

My lecky bike was parked up outside. The owner warned me a local was eyeing it. I had the battery in the shop with me.

There has been success (first software retrieved the file structure but folders empty). Second software retrieved all the files but in a bit of a random order. However, the person I was doing this for has located what they needed. So hopefully it has ended well.

The owner's long lunch is to walk his dog.

@gembo - I would give it a try in a machine running the UltimateBootCD (or ultimate boot USB if not CD drive) it has a battery of built in tools and is widely used to recover data from dead PCs it should detect the USB Drive too. But like was said could be 50/50. I have a few spare old laptops that run ubuntu if you want to borrow one - I think you live not too far away. PM me if you still need assistance

I am told the man in the shop sounds nice. He has quite a long lunch break which If I was his business advisor I would say was maybe when he should be open for schmoes like me. On the plus side, just been paid and swinging down near Cornelius on an electric bike (during a very late lunch hour)

@gembo - Fingers crossed.

I have used PhotoRec to recover data from various devices over the years; largely successfully, although by enlarge it depends on whats brtoken - https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

I would probably work through the advice on this page, which is logical and reasonable advice.

https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-recover-data-from-a-corrupt-memory-card-or-usb-drive/

I'd put the chances at 50/50 of successful recovery. Did we mention backups? (runs for cover)

(Beware free downloads promising to fix things; they often just install adware/malware and don't help you)
NB Diskdigger looks legit

I'll try and remember the name of the stuff from which I retieved some accidentally-deleted photos from a bon-corrupted memory card, though it's not the same problem.

Think it was diskdigger.

Did suggest the download stuff but poor person worried that will make it worse. Have supplied the whisky Tamnavulin. Also of course the unhelpful advice of not using memory sticks. Tricky when half data is in one place and half in another. This advice has been categorised as extremely unhelpful

I would think so - I'd suggest that they google and for example try here

If someone had lost all 33 reports they had written to get ahead of the game on what looks like a corrupted memory stick, is there any hope of getting them back?
