255 miles per day for more than two weeks is not achievable by many riders.

Mark Beaumont did a talk at Napier Uni this evening about Around The World in 80 Days, which involved riding 240 miles a day and not faffing about.

He hadn't heard of the TransAmerica ride, nor a velomobile*, nor, when I put it to him, did he fancy going back into the darkness of ultra-endurance riding, even if he could probably smash Marcel's time.

* Thus educated, he opined**, in his forthright manner, that a velmobile should have been excluded*** on the grounds of being too fast.
** in an accent that is a dead ringer for Dave's
*** Er, from a race whose rules said anything human powered goes.

Probably worth mentioning that RAAM is also running at the moment. Very good live tracking also.

No finishers yet, but Christopher Strasser is nearly there.

Dave Lewis came in 4th - (a Milan SL was first velo LB sold. Came as a kit from Raderwerk from Hanover.)
Don't know if there are any 'traditional' recliners in this event? Arellcat may know.

YouTube recommended this to me tonight: presumably it floated to the top as it combines my most-watched themes of TED talks and bicycles. Surprisingly there was nothing about 4-6-2 steam locomotives in there too.

He covers a lot of the reasons I like long bike rides, and very nearly encouraged me to sign up for the next one.

Fingers crossed for Dave Lewis. He is battling a problem with his Achilles tendon and the Milan doesn't have a lot of space to let him radically adjust cleat position.

@Arellcat - I'm not sure if saying that the red velomobile is twice as heavy as the one in the picture is supposed to make me feel better or worse :-). Twice as heavy or not, it still leaves me in the dust in the same way as seen in this video.

Great tracking info. Looking at a few of the individual riders' profiles, one of the folk at the back of the race has a target time of 28 days to ride the distance! Sounds a bit more manageable...

Peter Andersen finished - two down, dozens to go!

The Milan SL of Dave Lewis is now in fourth place. Moving at 3.2mph through the mountains (!) Velo has 250 miles to go.
He has been overtaken by Indiana Schulz with 166 miles to go. Bike is a 2015 Giant Defy w/ Nox Wheels
SPONSOR: Sugar Wheel Works-Hansen Family Dentistry

Marcel's velo sponsored by Schwalbe.

Marcel's Alpha Seven velomobile from Daniel Fenn is pretty special, though. It weighs just over half of what mine does, though it has no rear suspension and not much roominess. It would be an uncomfortable thing to ride around Edinburgh!

Hard to believe that the majority of riders are still not much over half distance.

Incidentally, Marcel's rear light is one of these:

Won using a velomobile by quite a margin. Guy behind on standard road bike is fantastic effort too. After that another velo - a Milan SL.
Virginia's tough terrain still ahead of much of the field.

Stats:
4165 miles
255 miles per day
16.4 mph av moving speed
10.4 mph av speed including stops

Been a bit of comment that Marcel Graber from Switzerland is way out in front in his velomobile.
I think second place is doing record time on coventional bicycle.
Once you're 3500+ miles in to an event your body starts getting 'mechanicals'. *Based on my vast experience of reading about such things!;-)
The Spot tracking is good. Click on rider / driver to see actual speed and last upload.
