Makes a good case to work on the Cycle Logistics front and combine it with rail - a rebirth of Red Star Parcels, using cycle courier at both ends and a timetabled train service.

Could we look at this for some key destinations. Cycle courier work is a great entry-level job for those with minimal academic qualifications but a decent brain to work with. I gather that many of the London couriers progressed to work for their clients, as the demand for physically moving media around declined, although the demand for moving small shipments* efficiently seems to be increasing (*90% of the packages delivered around a typical city weigh under 30Kg and can easily be delivered by bike or on foot)

"
ONLINE shopping giant Amazon is to open its Scottish headquarters in Edinburgh as it confirms plans for a massive new distribution depot.

...

"They are also looking to build a one million square foot logistics warehouse structure in the east coast of Scotland. I know they have looked at a site in Dunfermline, but they've also been looking in the Livingston/Bathgate area as well."

On the one hand, I am (eagerly) awaiting delivery of an ICE trike, which miraculously escaped the snowbound clutches of Heathrow only to be left mouldering in some import depot in New Jersey awaiting its papers. Nonetheless, when it arrives, it will still be under 10 days between order and delivery.

On the other hand, I ordered something to be posted on my behalf on Friday, Dec. 17. It was mailed in Loanhead and was to be delivered a scant dozen miles away. Still in transit, apparently, as the recipient remains ignorant of its existence.

I had heard stories about the underwhelming performance of the Royal Mail, but I'm still impressed.

Left DHL International (UK) Ltd. an incredibly sarchastic "what are we meant to do about this then?" sort of email. Written mainly to calm myself down.

Unfortunately according to the website they're too busy not answering the phone to answer emails.

I pointed out that since the parcel has been sitting kicking it's heels in their depot I have been able to get as far as South Gyle, reliably and fairly quickly, by bike or bus, so I didn't want any nonsense reply about the roads being impassable :)

Unfortunately this one has come international, and the depot is out at Newbridge along the impassable canal / A8 path :(

EDIT 3 - on hold to their customer services to <strike>ask </strike>tell them to turn the re-deliver service back on. Hold music is a 30 second loop of modern jazz, quite blatantly selected to drive people insane and make them get off hold. 10m17s of this. Argh!

EDIT 4 - customer service got me through to domestic customer service. Hurrah! "We don't have their system, can't help". However after a bit of badgering she was kind enough to give me a direct dial number for Newbridge and inform me that there won't be any re-deliveries before Christmas.

DHL card through the door today "please call to arrange a re-delivery, a re-direct or to collect".

Call the number.

"Your local DHL depot is now closed. Please call back within office hours, which are 9AM - 630PM".

Buh?

It's enough to make the cynical amongst us think they've just turned the "automated" service off as they are overwhelmed.

EDIT - having no luck with the DHL website I refer to the Amazon site. He's missed one digit out when scribbling on the card and made one so illegible I read a 0 as a 6.

EDIT 2 - I now find out from the tracking history that it's been sitting in Edinburgh since 13th December and they've taken 8 days to attempt to make a delivery.

cynical !
yes our company does indeed pride itself on the caliber of its employees and the fullest most advanced training that we receive.......blah blah blah ! Bottom line is shut up, stop moaning and get it done, who cares what the police say, I decide when we stop delivering ! I am not for a second suggesting that was said in our transport office, merely pointing out what could happen !
To be honest, with a little planning, most journys could be addapted to suit the conditions !I am still a bit of a luddite and refuse to hand over bank details to anyone except my employers, who are the most morally upstanding employer in the world and would never use them in a less than professional way.
On the other hand ny bank details are........
what happened to shop local, buy local.except when its on flea bay or amazon ? on a lighter note, christmas day, my grandson and son in law both getting bikes from santa, so taking both mine and my sons bikes with us to snowy lanark for a family christmas outing. As we used to say when mountain biking involved lycra,
see you in casualty !

Splitshift - I think the transport problems to some extent are being talked up by the media. It suits them to have stories which fit the "country grinds to a halt, who's to blame" mould. I do work for an organic farm in the Borders. They contacted the Daily Record which was claiming that all business deliveries were at a standstill to point out that they had fulfilled all their local deliveries and were still taking and delivering orders. The Record wasn't interested.
