The railway path starts a couple of miles east of Dalkeith in Whitecraig:
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@55.9221934,-3.0375517,17.5z/data=!5m1!1e3

I think the one you are referring to is indeed now the Borders Railway (though you can follow a branch as a cyclepath from Eskbank to Penicuik).

There is also a wee branch from the Elginhaugh viaduct to Dalkeith.

I'll head over to Dobbies, I should have thought on when I posted.

I have never found the railway path. Is it now the railway?

Nice quiet :)

Depends where you are coming from. NCN 1 along the Innocent etc is an option if a little long (you can pop through Dalkeith Country Park as an alternative to the Whitecraigs to Dalkeith railway path).

More direct along Gilmerton Road. Has a path alongside the road from outskirts of Gilmerton to by Dobbies.

Gilmerton Road, past Dobbie's, turn left at the roundabout after the A7, then turn right at the end of that road.

Shared use pavements from Gilmerton Station Road to Dalkeith, except for on Melville Gate Road.

EDIT: Pretty straightforward on the way there, but on the way back you need to take care crossing Lugton Brae and then again crossing back to Melville Gate Road as sightlines are very poor at both.

Any suggestions for nice quiet routes to Dalkeith avoiding the Sheriffhall roundabout?

Cheers.
