Aspidistra Property Ltd is an interesting business. The company has been dormant since 2013, despite holding "reserves" valued at nearly £8 million in 2017, and somehow making a profit of £680,000 in the same year. I was a bit mystified as to how a "dormant" company could make such a profit without trading. A quick Googol brought up this:

---

Why have a dormant company?

3. To hold a fixed asset such as a property

Dormant companies are often used to hold a particular types of asset.

The main example is a freehold property or the head lease to a property, with the dormant company option used by companies who deal with flat management. For such flat management companies, a separate Residents’ Association Company will usually handle management income, expenses and legal issues, meaning that the flat management company itself should meet the conditions required of a dormant company.

An investment holding company may be set up as a dormant company on the same basis and for much the same reason, to protect certain assets or intellectual property.

https://www.informdirect.co.uk/business-finance/dormant-company-reasons-why/

To be <strike>fair</strike> accurate, the family business looks to be ASPIDISTRA PROPERTY LIMITED, from which he has apparently resigned: https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/SC392885/officers

So Daniel Johnson MSP is concerned about the impact of parking charges on local businesses in Morningside. Clearly just forgot to mention that he owns 50% of the shares in Over the Counter Ltd - better known as Studio One and Paper Tiger. Easy to do - he was only the managing director up until 2016.
