So while lax penalties are shocking I can at least understand how a society can find itself being lax in this way. BUT what's unbelievably disgusting is the steady chain of incidents we hear about where those who leave people they've killed lying in the dirt, or people they've injured dying at the edge of the road, and who then claim "sorry I hadn't realised..." get a short ban from driving. So they can drive again. We let them drive again. Really - we do this. Bonkers sentencing. </p> <p>Harrowing statement I read somewhere from the family stating that the driver had "stolen their retirement from them". Devastating for them. Driver was half asleep but passed alcohol test. </p> <p>All three riders were injured and one is now paralysed. Totally devastating outcome for him and his family. The others took a long while to recover and I was shocked when I heard about this last year.
