Just came back from driving in Sicily. The standard speed limit, in wide urbans streets, and in the countryside, seems to be 50kph. Not that anyone but tourists seemed to be sticking to that.

On the motorway west of Palermo the fastest speed limit was 100kph iirc and the norm seemed to be 80kph. Again, almost universally disregarded.

Daily Mail* article approvingly quoted by Edinburgh’s Mr Toad, Nick Cook:

https://medium.com/@graham.grant/increase-the-speed-limit-to-80-mph-fat-chance-from-our-car-hating-government-9dc277e5bd50

Includes the classic line “Motorists are a marginalised constituency... ”

A lot of other fallacies, non sequiturs, misquoted statistics and leaps of logic.

*I’m not going to link to the Daily Mail: the author also published it on Medium. .

Is the M6 toll at Birmingham still the only UK toll road. We still use it, the price creeping up to £7. Always quite. Only ever had one traffic jam in maybe twenty trips. Starting to boost the economy by going into the Norton Canes service station to buy their falafels.

The rest of the M6 is generally moving about 40mph from just north of Manchester until Staffordshire.(where the toll starts). so We are paying to be allowed to drive faster.

Using toll roads to bring the incremental part of private ownership more inline with public transport can only be a positive in my view.

If cars were forbidden from ever being parked they would need drivers round the clock and increased fuel and maintenance thus boosting the economy.

I agree with @neddie that toll roads show no evidence of economic boost.

The French motorways are mostly tolled.

Which is why they are beautifully smooth & mostly clear of traffic, so enabling 80mph.

@acsimpson, legalising drugs would also boost the economy. As you say, boosting the economy not necessarily good.

Generating employment, paying above the minimum wage, middle aged folk like me taking a sabbatical paid for by the state dole money for a year of travelling and younger person doing my job for a year. Are all better in my opinion.

I actually met some Danes in Australia in 1993 who were doing the latter suggestion. Met them a few times on that trip.

As gembo says it's probably an undeniable fact that it would boost the economy. However I suspect there is no mention of the other fact that boosting the economy is not in itself a good thing. If I have the right figures cars consume 15% more fuel at 80 rather than 70. Although I suspect what it really means is cars doing 90 rather than 80 so they could be anything up to 30% less efficient.

I can't remember which outlet I saw it in but just this week I was reading about the growing evidence that hunting for boosted economies is spelling disaster for the planet in an alarmingly short timescale.

Incidentaly, didn't the last government discover they could boost the economy just by including prostitution in the figures! (Or have I elaborated that?)

Baldcyclist - deaths per billion km travelled on EU motorways is not centrally collected. However, only Norway and Sweden had fewer deaths per billion km travelled in 2016 (Figure 8).

The motorway speed limit in France is 80mph in good weather and given the lower population density and excellent quality of the motorway network it's quite common for people to travel at that speed. I've never heard it cited as a factor in any economic miracles.

I'm sure there are other ways that conventional economic outputs could be boosted by a government that was interested in doing that.

You'd think, just maybe, that when her driver was taking her round the M25 she would have noticed that when the traffic gets heavier, they slow it down so more of it gets through at a reasonable speed. Morons.

Research indicates that a 10mph increase in the GB motorway speed limit would result in an extra 18 deaths per year. I think any Minister introducing such a proposal should be required to knock on the doors of the next of kin of 18 people killed in motorway accidents every year.

Also, increasing the speed limit does nothing to tackle congestion, as drivers can only travel at that speed in light traffic conditions. After all, it's not like folk are belting round the bypass at 70 during rush hour, desperate for that extra minute a day that a 80mph limit would bring.
