That was a very narrow escape in Leeds. I once had to buy drink for all concerned as mate asked one of the stag night/hen do parties why they did not have a theme as all the other stag nigh /hen do parties were themed. They did not like this. I paid for drinks all round, hurrah

Leeds was interesting... about 20 youngish men got onto my carriage and started clapping and chanting (in an unthreatening way if that is possible).

5 mins later they got up and walked to another carriage.

I have found Leeds to be extremely lively on occasion. I was once accused of being landed gentry because I was wearing a jacket.

I also found out that it is lively in York after the races have been on. One gentleman decided to make a courageous jump onto the train as it was leaving.

The 10 minutes it took for BTP to take him away meant that the people next to me missed the next train to Manchester Airport and have to wait another hour.

They ain't chuffed as they left Aberdeen at noon and would like to arrive while they still have a pulse...

Yes lively in Newcastle

I once phoned Mrs Garto from the Inverness train. She said I thought you were at a funeral. I said yes but now I am at a party. The train staff moved all post funeral people into one carriage and all normal people into the other. This is what I call clever.

Ticket prices should be a reasonable proxy for likely busyness of a train.

No but sometimes there is a bit of sticking around in Aberdeen pubs waiting on colleagues then hitting the train for more drinking and rambunctiousness

My understanding from a helicopter pilot contact is that they fly offshore worker on and off the rigs all through the day / week so I don't think there is a mass clockout of excited workers.

@greenroofer, I can offer no help except that when I worked at Strathclyde uni, our professor ran a company training bar staff and scotrail staff in conflict management and one of our scenarios was the one you describe with added anger due to delays etc

If someone were to be taking a train back from Aberdeen to Edinburgh of a Saturday evening, is there are particularly time or date they would best avoid so as to minimise their chances of being on a train full of offshore workers coming off shift.

(Asking for a friend, obviously)

I'd like to apologise to any Aberdonians or offshore workers who are offended by this question. My (possibly unfounded) perception is that some trains to/from Aberdeen can be quite 'lively' of an evening. I do know people who've had bad experiences on them.
