I was driving back along the A8, Maybury Road then Queensferry Road and passed through the alleged chaos unscathed - apart from the lights being off, it looked quite ordered. A flashing ambulance and fire appliance each made it through the Gogarabout in less than a minute apiece after people shuffled out of their way. All it takes is a civil human every ten or so (mostly single-occupant) vehicles to give other lanes a chance.

"Traffic chaos", of course.

We had a wee lightbulb-flicker around 20:00, which was momentary for us but which had more prolonged effects nearby in Pirniefield.

Was this what knocked out the traffic lights at Gogarburn and Maybury?

Overhead line takes quite high level feeds from national grid so should rarely be impacted by a power cut unless it’s knocking out a whole region (which in fairness this did)
Signalling is fed from street supply but with UPS then backup generators to keep the job running

Scottish Power has just shifted to 100% of generation by wind power / renewables.

In no way connected to this event!

Assume Scotrail isn't affected - they are own grid?

I was just about to leave work this evening when I felt a great disturbance in the force, as if millions of light bulbs and computers suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

Fun though it was, breathing in the heady primeval atmosphere between two sets of securely closed doors with de-energised maglocks, I did eventually escape along with all my colleagues, to breath instead the heady industrial atmosphere of all the emergency diesel generators going full tilt. Then we realised no-one could get out of the car park because the place was in lock-down (and perhaps because the barriers also require electricity).

Burglar alarms as far as Longstone were still singing merrily to the world when I finally hit the road. I heard the trams lost power, as did a whole bunch of traffic lights. Anyone know how extensive the power cut was? Twitter reported 'west Edinburgh'.

[Thought about putting this in the Spotted thread, but it's really more of an 'un-spotted' incident.]
