It's not the first day of winter! The solstice is "midwinter" just like the summer solstice is "midsummer." But that's from the days when there were only two seasons - summer ran from Beltane to Samhain, and winter was from Samhain to Beltane. If you're going by modern seasons, I'd say winter is December, January and February.

@chdot - I think Sir Winston said it best;

"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

How could it be bad?

I can also get my garlic planted today. One of my
herbals says that garlic is traditionally planted on the
shortest day and harvested on the longest so I am going to try
it. Provided I can chisel through the permafrost to get it in
the ground.

Good, I need to top up my tan....

Actually, good from our chickens' point of view. Leaving in the dark and coming home in the dark means no free ranging during the week for them. And I'm fed up of having to de-freeze their drinking water every morning.

Today is 'officially' the first day of winter.

Tomorrow the days start getting longer.
