@ARobComp Ooh, I'm sorry to have missed the Cloudwater... Will keep any eye out in future. Deuchars was my tipple of choice there when I was a student. It was pretty left-field back then...

@PS Last time I was there, there was a tap takeover by Cloudwater who make tasty tasty beverages. So everything on was from them. Not sure what their normal taps look like now. However one must assume that they have some decent selection compared to the old belhaven/tennants/guiness of old.

@ARobComp That's good to hear. Not been to the JJ for 4 or 5 years, I think, but it used to be a favourite back in uni days. What beers did they have on last time you were in?

@rosie - yes, meant to ETA my post for Roseburn but out for several hours afterward - correct.

@wingpig - yes, original Tap is no more sadly, think the hotel calls it's "cafe bar" The Tap in homage.

If we are talking walks to pubs near stadia, then Clockwork Beer Co in Glasgow is walkable to Hampden.

I went in the Tap of Lauriston once or twice for some insane reason. It's reinvented itself as an hotel since. What was Nisbet's called again after it was Cas Rock? Something central American?

Jolly Judge has reinvented itself as a craft beer bar (with quite an excellent selection to that end!) and as such is a brilliant mix of beer geeks and Royal Mile "personalities".

Very much enjoyed my last visit.

I'm indignant about "no good pubs near Murrayfield" as the Roseburn Bar is really very nice on a non match day - good beer, friendly atmosphere, a handsome public bar rather like a London pub with fine big windows, a little snug. It's my local.

I've only been there the once, but four well-inebriated people shouting and pointing into each others' faces and doing that thing where they looked round to try and drag other people into their argument set my alarums off, when the only other people in the place was our group. I was comfortable in some surprisingly manky places when I was small but my antenna were recalibrated when I moved up here.

Near Hampden; The Auld Smiddy is a nice enough pub for match day

Paris; a wee Arab bar near the Stade de France (memory fades) that brother and I watched Norway Morrocco in after seeing Scotland lose to Brazil. My kilt may have helped.

To continue pubs near stadiums?

Nothing of note near Murrayfield. Hampden is also a good pub desert.

The Clep near Dens and Tannadice good.

Remember a Scotland match in 1996 or 97 in Paris - old stadium. There was a pub about 50m from it which was within a police "cordon". We got there early and spent a few hours eating and drinking there in pleasant isolation.

It was like a reverse zoo watching the other side of the cordon!!!

Bert's gone?

Digger's is that Shandon or Gorgie? Certainly Dalry Road has a number of dives. This theme continues as the road crosses into Gorgie. Does not pick up if you veer up to longstone or persevere to Murrayburn Silver Wing is it?

Whereas the pubs of leith walk (Robbies) and abbey hill (the artisan, Safari lounge) are better. Shoiuld we focus on pubs near stadiums.

No good bars near Ibrox nor Parkhead. Hielan Jessie's being an oasis on the long and dangerous route back from the east end.back in the day.

The Salutation up at Tannadice where they gently terrorise was good.

Blue Blazer? Nice wee pub where you could get a toastie and a decent pint.
Bow Bar - good, but about 5 seats.
Captain's Bar for the music.
Bert's Bar.
Nothing good in Dalry.

If "at present" is not a stipulation, the Junction before 1996 was always quite pleasant, even to someone freaked out by pubs, alcohol-exacerbated behaviour and socialisation. The Holyrood before 1998 on Tuesday evenings? The Maltings, when the dog wasn't there?

On the subject of Jarl, I was in the Royal Okay earlier in the year and was shocked to get change for a tenner in exchange for three pints.
