@ragingbike I agree that a little traffic calming (done well) would be a great plan on Ravelston Dykes - all the school run X5s seem to think that as long as their little darling is safe inside a metal box, it doesn't matter about anyone else!

Brochure doesn't mention cycling over it, or height for 700mm trench. For 900mm trench, height is 85mm so higher and steeper than most road humps.

LivD - I saw it this morning but was running late so didn't take a photo (and going the other way)

It looks more like a trench covering than a permanent road feature.

Quite chunky and plastically and yes looks horrid to cycle over.

I was trying to work out whether it was outside where the builders are or not.

I will try a better examination tomorrow...

I saw for the first time a couple of days ago on that killer wind day .. head down in the dark. There was a sign saying speed bumps ... but only the one randomly placed it seems to straddle the middle of the road. I ride quite wide and actually thought it was a good position to slow down some of the cars who seem to think that the proximity of 2 x 20 signs means 40mph ...

I think I was told by a council officer that all new speed bumps should be sinusoidal, so as to be relatively cyclist friendly. Even if I've remembered that right, it may not be universally applied by all council departments.

I may of course be mistaken - my husband saw it a couple of days ago and wondered if it was temporarily covering a hole in the road. My view was very brief so may be wrong!

I spotted a new speed bump just arrived on Ravelston Dykes today. Just west of the Orchard Road South junction. It’s a brutal thing that looks like sections bolted onto the road, about a metre or more front to back, and taking up the middle third of the road. Looks horrible to cycle over, and (in the dark) my first hint that it was there was the driver ahead of me sweving violently towards the kerb to avoid driving over it.

My fleeting glimpse of it suggests
a) risk of accident for cyclists who are taking the lane down that stretch (and given that it’s downhill, 20mph is perfectly achievable and so why would you hug the gutter?)
b) risk for cyclists who Are hugging the gutter from drivers steering dangerously away from the hump towards the edge of the road.

There were a few cones at the side of the road but I didn’t spot further signs, in the dark.

Would be interested to get the opinion of passing cyclists.
