“

As I understand it, there is still some form a masterplan for Granton. There certainly have been others in the past and it once even had an over-arching body - called the Waterfront Edinburgh Ltd - which is now long consigned to the pages of history.

And into that mix - back in the day - we trotted along with what we were convinced was a no-brainer of an idea.

It was for an outdoor swimming pool, bordered by shipping container artist studios, on the site of a former walled garden that we imagined would, in time, be able to host an international garden festival.

Hmmm. Given that their fallen fence is already blocking most of the width of the path beyond the West Granton Rd underpass, expect a diversion?

For comparison

“

Energy, water and waste flow through an integrated ‘closed-loop system’: biogas from the sewage plant heats homes; waste heat from a data centre feeds the district energy network.

The tram line was running before the first residents arrived - not promised for a future phase or subject to a funding review, but operational on day one.

Buildings vary in architecture and expression, but a design framework - consistently enforced - keeps them coherent without making them uniform. The parks and waterways are structural elements of the layout, not afterthoughts fitted around the blocks.

“

https://www.buildedinburgh.com/p/saturday-column-building-for-the

Not just Granton of course

“
Consider the speculative house-building at Western Harbour, before the global ‘financial collapse’ in 2008.

There was a masterplan, a development company was established, the ambitions - mixed uses, high-density urbanism, excellent public realm, sustainable transport - were clearly stated.

But witness today the blocks of flats, many of them discoloured by the salty sea air, along with the cheerless spaces between them, filled to bursting with cars.

Whenever there is a gap between aspiration and delivery, not only is it rarely acknowledged but no-one is ever asked to explain why.

“

Easy to say ThisIsEdinburgh, but more ThisIsUK - or just the ‘international money’ world

Council leader Jane Meagher said: "We declared a housing emergency in 2023 and so these energy efficient quality homes are much needed and from what I’ve seen are being greatly enjoyed.

"The video shows how easy it is for residents to access the beach, parks, good transport links, places to walk, cycle and wheel as well as having good local shops and other facilities nearby.

“This includes funding to refurbish and restore structures such as Madelvic House, Granton Castle Walled Garden and the platforms in Granton Station Square, the latter of which are located beside the beautifully restored former Granton Station building.”

Granton Lighthouse will be operated by Out of the Blue Arts and Education Trust after its restoration. The council said it will be fully refurbished to create a learning, enterprise, exhibition and cafe space.

The £4.2 million project will also restore some of the original features such as the lantern, while the outside area will be transformed into a social space for people to sit and relax.

Edinburgh's long-awaited waterfront tram link to Leith and Newhaven is set to finally be up and running by 21 June - with the next extension planned to create a link with a “coastal town” and cultural quarter taking shape in Granton.

Coastal town eh - with lots of houses and few shops?

Another example of what we’re aiming to achieve with our 20-minute neighbourhood approach is under way at Granton Waterfront, where we’re strengthening the existing area with a £1.3bn project to develop a sustainable community. Here, people will live in affordable environmentally-friendly homes, have excellent transport and active travel links to the rest of the city and access to lots of open and green space, arts, education, sports and culture.

Thanks

Anyone mention where the money was coming from?

Or whether active travel ‘networks’ would be finished first??

Copying post from similar thread:

IF ANY of it happens increases chance of a tram line along Roseburn Corridor…

A wee birdie tells me this option is no longer being seriously considered. Still time for it to be reconsidered, of course.

Is a line to Granton still being considered? Is the intention to go via WGH?

Yes to both is what I was told.

Ha, I thought it was like a building term or something but is infact a Gangsta landlord holding us all to Ransom or chucking tenant farmers off their land type dukey thing,

“I do not know what a Ransom Strip is”

Basically a small bit of land that can be crucial to a development - eg to allow an access road - so can be ‘worth’ considerably more than a similar sized piece nearby.

I believe Duke of Buccleuch owns/owned such a strip in Granton that complicated the tram and/or cycle route.

No, just poorly worded. Though they do want to consult specifically with the locals, who it is felt do not respond or do not get asked or somesuch. So well intentioned.

Here is a bit of info for @wingpig (I confess I do not know what a Ransom Strip is)

There is a landownership plan in the slides within the consultation that give the most up to date picture. The majority of the land was bought earlier this year from National Grid. Some was already owned by the Council (e.g. the industrial estates). I don’t think there are any significant title issues over for example ransom strips.
