So is there a thread for 2019 targets? Can't obviously find one. Do we add them here or start a new one?

I did 7787km, which was down by about 2000 on last year, mainly because I only commuted 3 days a week this year. However I did fewer long rides too- only 2 > 100km. I also failed to get 100000m of ascent, falling short by over 6000m. Had 214 days on the bike, but over 320 active days once running and walking were included.

My goals were
1. Maintain the bike better e.g. change the chain
before it means a new cassette. Nope
2. Do lots more exploring including... Yes
3. ...finding a new route to work Yes
4. Use lunchtimes to explore the Pentlands Yes
5. Do a couple of long overseas rides Yes
6. Do a Coast to Coast ride here Nope
7. Compete a BRM Audax Nope
8. See if I can fit in a 300km Audax Nope

So I met half of them. Main thing this year was focussing on using Veloviewer Explorer - I've always enjoyed riding new roads and this has given me a way to measure it. 2019 goals will revolve around that I think...

I didn't have a distance target, really, other than to hope my increased commute length this year would help offset an almost total lack of going-away-anywhere holidays and touring and even day rides.

My total for 2018 was 5320km (3306 miles), which was both the most ever and an increase over last year's 4783km, in which I had an almost total lack of holidays and touring, but did crank out a bunch of miles in training (though not enough to beat 2016's distance).

I used the red torpedo for 63% of the distance, the sparkly purple recumbent 18% and Matilda the Elephant Bike 12%, and it brought my all-time utilisation by distance of the torpedo from 29% to 34%, although in 2018 utilisation was never less than 45%, and exceeded 80% on five intervals of measurement.

I was aiming for 100km a week this year, but stopped recording my commute cycles (at least 60km a week) a long while back. adding on the weeks missing I'm comfortably over 6k KM for the year which is over the target I wanted, however still feel like I've barely cycled this year. I think I've done around an hour a day at least, but rarely rides of more than a couple hours.

According to Strava I did "activity" 160 times. I record anything that isn't my normal commute, or going to the pub etc. Lots of build on!

Mine were:
1) keep cycling and do some longer rides
2) get and use a mountain bike
3) get rid of the bike frame and other bits of bike we don't want
Outcomes:
1) kept cycling. Longest single ride seems to have been 100km, though I did also have a week cycling various Pyreneenan cols in May
2) did get a mountain bike and have ridden it a bit
3) fail

Next year's will probably be similar!!

Oh, and I've been on Veloviewer for a while - I do fancy doing some square chasing but haven't realy done any yet - needs warmer weather really.

I achieved my 2018 target of 3,500 miles yesterday by getting to 3,510 with a commute to work. It is purely coincidental that my 2018 target on Strava was revised down yesterday from 4,500 to 3,500.

This seems to be the relevant thread from the start of the year:

http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=18455

I was aiming for:

A 50 mile ride every month.
Explore plenty of new bits of the Lothians.
Cycle 1000km in one month.
Have at least a couple of multi-day cycle adventures.
Cycle to Roslin.
Get properly stuck in to organising PoP.

Mixed success. 10/12 months had a 50 mile+ ride; didn't have a 1000 km month and whilst I did cycle to Roslin, I didn't do so in the manner intended.

I did manage to beat last year's total distance, by a whole 5 km, though.

I slightly regret not doing enough tracking to work out our household Soderbergh (or whatever it was) number. Not very high, I suspect, but it would have been interesting to see. My own personal one would have been higher, but it's slightly cheating as I the OH does the weekly shop in the car so I'm profiting from the internal combustion engine even when not being transported by it

I go with a rough average of 100. Miles commuting a week, then 50 miles at weekend, though can be more like 100km. I then multiply by 40 out of the 52 weeks. Gets me 6000 miles. Clearly this is a very rough average but I do think it is very inaccurate nor is it an over estimate. My second job at the moment out in Craigmillar has added some miles and more like 44 weeks commuting and I have 600km planned in Mallorca at Easter etc.

Cycle Service report I am very heavy on cassette etc poor changing of gears. I try not to brake too much but get through blocks and rims too. Commute in to town is largely downhill.

I use a Google spreadsheet for it, and it includes tyre diameter info in case my bike computer conks out and I have to reprogramme it.

I'm trying to bring my GPS with me each ride (even to the shops) for Strava(g)ing purposes, but only to add to the "here be cyclists" grand dataset rather than playing in league tables.

Re measuring - how does anyone manage to log every single wee ride over a year anyway? I'd feel silly turning on Strava or the Garmin to nip to the shops. Have considered digging out both ancient cateye bike comps, putting new batteries in, fitting one on each regularly used bike & then leaving (duct taped) in place till Dec 31st 2019... Not that I have any target in mind, just out of interest.

How did people get on with their annual targets this year ?whether distance, days, climbing etc..

Following an intensive last 7 days, I am now within 19km of making mine, which is still 1,000km less than last year's owing to the snow in Jan & Feb. Now off to Crammond with MrsMcR for a cake (and to claim that last 19km).
