Part ordered. Next question: can I fit it myself? Have never interfered with a freehub myself...

Crazy customer service off Alpine Bikes. SJS are tip-top.

Just had to buy a new freehub as I've munched YET ANOTHER on my hope pro 4 CX hub.

Hoping the new wider range cassette will stop this happening so much (every year or so at the moment and they aint cheap).

Sorry you're having such a bummer. Hopefully you can get it on ebay if not SJS?

Aha! I did not Google the part or check SJS because... I guess I assumed Alpine would already have tried that? Will check in with them and note that I'll buy it myself.

@neddie that is a good story & bit of problem solving!

This reminds me of when I once tried to fill up a car in U S of A at an automated fuel pump. The pump insisted that I enter a US zip code...

The only thing I could think of to resolve the situation was to enter Beverley Hills 90210 from the TV show.

And guess what? It worked!

Although it is often possible to find obscure Shimano spares being offered by perfectly respectable and legitimate sellers on eBay, all too frequently they turn out to be located abroad with concomitant high postage costs and/or delivery times. Equally, simply Googling "Shimano" followed by the required part number will usually turn up a number of potential suppliers - usually including SJS, who do seem to have managed to position themselves as the go-to supplier for Shimano bits when no-one else in the UK has the item you need.

As chdot says, they're a good company to deal with. Maybe not as ridiculously quick to get stuff shipped as Wiggle/CRC (who sometimes seem to get orders dispatched before I've actually clicked the final 'confirm' button!) but satisfyingly efficient and helpful.

Plus postage.

Good company to deal with.

Have all sorts of things that other shops don’t (and some things that some shops do have, but don’t get put on their websites).

Weird clunking noises from rear wheel of Surly have been diagnosed as a knackered drive-side cone. Alpine say it has to be exactly THAT Shimano part (Y3SP98090 for a Deore XT freehub for dic brake) - only they don't have one on hand. And Shimano are out of stock. And won't have them back in stock again for... SIX MONTHS.

Whu? Wha? How long??

Barring tracking one down in an other Edinburgh bike shop (they will make enquiries on my behalf tomorrow) is ebay my bestest bet? Alpine also making noises about maybe just getting a new rear wheel, which seems an extreme (and expensive!) reaction. IMO.

Advice / suggestions / intel on interchanagability of parts?
