9.8% cycle commuting rate in Edinburgh during 2017, just 0.3% in Midlothian!

Edinburgh is merely frightening. Midlothian is terrifying.

Slightly disingenuous to yoke together bike use falling over the last five years with a doubling of spending that only started last year. Especially as it takes on average two years for new infrastructure to create new cycle commuters (and that's something really good quality like the Cambridge guided busway)

Yeah, I recently heard CO2 output generally goes down with economic output. So we could just start tanking the economy to save the planet...

"I remember compiling statistics from the DFT which showed car use spiked again in the 90's after that recession started to ease."

Sooo, we need another recession, now, where might we find one of those?....

Oh, that's another thread ;)

The statistics show that cycle commuting modal share has remained at 2% since 2007 (Table 11.14).

Total distance cycled (a fairly flakey statistic) increased from 288m km in 2016 to 290m km in 2017 (Table 5.3). Although as Crowriver says, this is a fall from 369m km in 2014.

A different TS stats publication, this time showing local authority level data, shows that Edinburgh is now effectively a different (transport) world from the rest of Scotland. 9.8% cycle commuting rate in Edinburgh during 2017, just 0.3% in Midlothian!

On a more serious note, I'm sure I remember compiling statistics from the DFT which showed car use spiked again in the 90's after that recession started to ease.

We need a step change in the whole transport sector.

Yup end the war on the motorist, stop wasting money on dwindling end users, spend the money where the demand is; build more roads. I'm sick of sitting in traffic caused by this clowncil.

/EEN mode.

SO depressing. The stats on bus ridership are awful too. Congestion, price rises, cuts to routes - who would have thought? We need a step change in the whole transport sector.

Carmaggeddon here we come!

13% rise in number of cars registered in Scotland since 2007, 31% rise in traffic since 1995 (the year the west supposedly hit "peak car" - Scotland 20 years behind it seems).

Also seems (with the possible exception of Edinburgh) that 2014 was "peak bike" in Scotland (at least in C21st), as I've been saying for a while...

"The number of people travelling by bike also fell over the past five years, with just 3% of people now commuting by bike."
