Ah, shame. I shall miss the post-PoP pint. Have much enjoyed getting tipsy in the company of the instigators and hard workers in the past.

And I've just worked out who fimm is, and I was right next to her for most of the challenge. Oh well, I'll know faces next time.

As we did not have the chance to hold a proper POP pub-based post-implementation review this weekend (the main downside of our pop-goes-local approach afaics) some of the organisers will be gathering at 3pm in Hemma this Saturday. You'd all be welcome

Oh, fimm was right behind me on the ride out of the meadows... And yeah, I had to dive onto the pedestrian side of the path to avoid the same van on the way there.

My video took longer to render than I expected (left it going overnight last night), so I'll get that uploaded this evening - assuming it's not got anything incriminating in it. That covers the chicaine at the meadows, innocent tunnel (going in), the one around Duddingston sort of area, and then the Magdalene Gardens one.

Thanks again to Frenchy for organising, it was good to put some faces (and names) to names!

Also, our (almost never-ending) whirlpooling cycle around the turning circle in Craigmillar amused me by reminding me of a scene from a certain children's story:

"And the Tigers were very, very angry, but still they would not let go of each others' tails. And they were so angry, that they ran round the tree, trying to eat each other up, and they ran faster and faster, till they were whirling round so fast that you couldn't see their legs at all."

The century-old book in question ("The Story of Little B**** S****") is unfortunately rather "of its time" and the names given to the, supposedly Indian, characters, and the (in other respects, relatively charming) illustrations are sadly dreadfully racist stereotyped portrayals, although it is a nice story for children when considered solely in terms of plot (I enjoyed it as a story as a small child, but of course did not realise (or perhaps even really notice) just how offensive the cartoonish portrayals of people were at that age).

(The chasing tigers are on pages 46 - 47 of the PDF, those pages at least are inoffensive. However, please do not say that you weren't warned if you choose to follow the link to the book.)

I enjoyed the Chicane Challenge, it was a good excuse to get out on a bike on a (luckily) sunny afternoon!

(I was the person on one of the rather more vanilla bikes there, one of the city hire bikes.

I thought it was quite amusing to be asked by quite so many folk what the burgher bikes are like, I would have thought that everyone would have already taken one for a test ride by now, just out of curiosity! ;-) )

Big thanks to Frenchy for organising things. Also thanks to @laidback for the loan of the electric Helios, the acceleration is amazing.

We left quite promptly at the end, as the boys were getting restless and we had promised a trip to Porty, for some ice-creams.

Finally made it home just before 6, seconds before the rain started.

Thank you all who came to the chicane challenge/funny-shaped bikes event. Attendance was about 3x what I was expecting, which meant a bit more delay at each of the stops than I'd anticipated, but people seemed to enjoy it all the same.

Your handling skills in tight spaces are too good though - I genuinely expected to have to lift some bikes out of tight spots, which would have made for good photos. I think the point was proven regardless.

I took the radical decision not to bring my Serious Camera today, mainly because it's heavy and partly because I decided I didn't have room in my bag (er, Elephant Bike + panniers?…). I only took two or three photos on my phone. The chicane challenge was a good ride though, and we escaped the rain (which came and went while I did my shop afterwards).

A similar looking van was parked at the eastern end of the Meadows by the time biketrain and I returned, at 15.27 according to my GPS. The driver was very busy having a smoke, but it's OK because he had switched on his Universal Parking Lights.

@Arellcat - not sure where you're heading but you can get to Roslin via Musselburgh and Dalkeith on the NCN 1 and 196. Fir the Shawfair end, you could come off NCN1 at Monktonhall and take Old Craighall Road.

Neither exactly direct routes, but possibly less hilly.

@Arellcat- Energy output is probably minimised by going along Duddingston Park/Millerhill Road, although there are definitely more pleasant route choices. QuietRoute 61 from Magadelene Glen to Gilmerton has a bit more climbing, but doesn't involve cycling down Millerhill Road.

If you have time, you could carry on through Magdelene and down to Porty - finish with a coffee at the Little Green Van.

There are issues crossing the four lanes of Milton Road at Hope Lane. It's very hard to cross safely without using the pedestrian crossing, but the crossing has a small offset central island with barriers.

The bridge across the railway and Sir Harry Lauder Road, from Hope Lane to St. Mark's Place has tight chicane at the Hope Lane (West) end and an even tighter chicane and ramp with a tight 180 bend at the Porty end.
