Once the lorry driver witness said he thought the cyclist would be hard to see and beeped his horn to try and give a warning, I think it was almost certain that there would be an acquittal.

Who cycles up Lady Road and thinks we need more option 1a around the city. Cars shooting up your inside and outside protected only by paint. (someone who never cycles you assume)

Lady Road particularly nasty as the far side of the junction is a pinch point, and you have to take the lane, which I don't think would be the case here.

To what extent does the modeling of displaced traffic take traffic evaporation into account?

Feels awfully like the Kings Road junction has been firmly put in the 'too difficult/too expensive/cannae do it' box. I wonder whether those signing this off possess first-hand experience of cycling through the junction at peak times. But nice big signs always help.

So, no infrastructure for cyclists but a bit of tweaking of road markings, maybe move a pedestrian refuge or two, and some signs. Aye, that'll prevent the next death. Not.

Portobello High Street has reasonable access for along its length, but the opening at this junction just encourages its use as a through route to the A199 when Sir Harry Lauder Road bypasses it just fine. Close off the High Street access to the junction and direct it instead (narrowly) into King's Road.

You'd be left with a T-junction with lots of space for pedestrians and cycles and lots of 'traffic flow' headroom to make it pleasant to use.

I assume there would be uproar from some quarters but I'm sure the idea of a quieter High Street would find some support, and if it's lodged in the imagination now then it might actually happen in the next decade.

edit: you could probably turn some of the antis by explaining it would mean fewer bikes on the prom

I can't help but think the closure of the King's Road car park is an opportunity to close it at the top, removing it from this junction and greatly simplifying the situation. Then, the problem is how to allow access to King's Road:

* Through Hillcoat, effectively merging King's Road into that estate.
*- they have different bins so maybe an issue for access to make collections?
* Separate junction onto Portobello High Street
*- If the junction were scaled back to standard N/S then E/W phases, removing all the slip roads, islands and hatching there could be space. It wouldn't be the closest residential access to a junction in Edinburgh.
*- Might not even reduce capacity on the junction
*-- Slip roads are blocked at busy times anyway
*-- Removes the King's Road phase
* Behind the houses to Seafield Road
*- Could be done as part of Seafield redevelopment
*- Compromises the active travel route through the former car park, making it more like an LTN road than a dedicated route.

On the contrary, now is precisely the time to be thinking of solutions. If this junction were an aeroplane it would be grounded and the engineers would be ripping one apart looking for the causes of the accident and planning immediate rectification.

Meanwhile, thousands of people in vehicles, bicycles and on foot are flowing through that junction everyday.

It's not just this junction - there are probably about a dozen similar seas of tarmac in the Council area with unacceptable vulnerability times for cyclists and pedestrians. Utterly unacceptable in 2020. The city has to shoot the traffic flow fox and start designing these junctions for local, active travel journeys first, followed by PT, goods and, finally, private cars.

The City Mobility Plan being considered by the TEC on 12 Nov is cause for comfort - it is very encouraging.

On the specific point of this week's tragedy, I would encourage you to write to members of the TEC to make sure that something is on the agenda for next week. I'm sure it will be, but make your feelings known.

Closing off that left hand turn at the junction should be considered. It might even have the benefit of reducing some of the traffic that travels through Porty. The obvious objection will be that there's a big building site close by, but they could open a new exit onto Harry Lauder Road easily enough (in theory, in reality it would require long and many consultations).

Probably too soon to be looking at solutions while people are still processing this.

“I am wondering now about another minute's silence on that crossroad”

My thought was that it should be more than a minute.

If it’s deliberately at the same time of day it’s not ‘rush hour’.

“In previous tragic instances we have had at least some contact with family or friends so make sure it's something they would sanction or welcome. I wonder if any folk on here might potentially know someone.“

Yes

There is at least one person on here who lives in Musselburgh.

I’m sure something will emerge.

There are also CCE people who live in Porty (I think including one/more involved in Porty Spokes).

My advice

Assume there will be ‘something’.

Presume those CCEers who have done this sort of thing before will be (reluctantly) thinking...

Best to do the planning off-forum.

IF the family says no, obviously that’s to be respected, but this is a notorious bit of road, which one well known Porty person has had a life damaging experience there.

It’s about more than remembering one person - and others who shouldn’t have died - there is clearly a problem here that needs to be dealt with.

Additionally, I think the family of the person who was the cause of the Holyrood event have Portobello connections.

Perhaps it's too soon to mention, but I am wondering now about another minute's silence on that crossroad as we did before - at the moment in these times it's particularly difficult for families given funeral restrictions are so tight and it can be a way for friends to pay their respects.

In previous tragic instances we have had at least some contact with family or friends so make sure it's something they would sanction or welcome. I wonder if any folk on here might potentially know someone.
