Just back from a week in Faro in the Algarve and took a food tour with these lovely people. Highly recommended.

Anyway, it turns out our tour guide was an enthusiastic transit cyclist in an inhospitable environment so we had lengthy discussions about our respective cities and political engagement with active transport.

The idea of anyone in local government cycling to work was some kind of glorious utopian world in her view so we are making progress in the eyes of some. But it's very easy to look at places in the Netherlands and think we've made no progress at all.

The whole thing is spot on. The problem isn't that kerbs aren't dropped or corner radii are too big it's that no one important takes active travel seriously.

If it's done as an afterthought to appease vocal oddballs it will never be a popular option. I hope our Active Nation Commissioner is going to point that out.

That statement about the "quiet roads" is 110%.
