The Union Canal towpath as far as Cultins Road is entirely passable, though the stretch next to Calder Crescent still has a long wide strip of ice down the middle. I picked the wrong side to go around this afternoon and discovered the evidence of post-snowfall dog walkers. :-(

The canal itself is still largely frozen, but it's floating ice now so probably not too structural.

State of the cyclepaths right now.

Porty -> clerk street. No bother, the odd ridge of ice still in place but otherwise fine.

Meadows: Massive pothole next to the old east end playground, lots of rotting leaves making things greasy.

Getting from there to Haymarket, you have to be creative.

Haymarket -> South Queensferry: Atrocious, several areas of widespread sheet ice, a LOT of rotten vegetable matter, two points where the winnows from the snowplough have completely blocked the path.

Roseburn -> Ferry Road: Lovely, overgritted if anything.

CEC undertook at 'Staff Travel Survey' in 2008 which revealed an impressive 10.1% of respondents cycled to work.
Although I think that cyclists are more likely to respond to these types of surveys - so maybe 10.1% is an over-estimate.
They were offering incentives of the chance of winning Bike co-op vouchers so this also clearly skews the sample!

The last time I filled in a voluntary return form on how I get to work (as a part-time Council employee) was at least three years ago. So there should be figures available but they will be a bit out of date.

Ages ago everyone in my popular city-centre-based financial services company had to fill in a questionnaire describing whence and by which means they commuted, at the behest of the council (possibly due to something related to the city centre offices' justifications for their large underground car parks). There was nothing about routes (except implicitly for the likes of the staff who lived in Fife and said they commuted by train) but some time after the assessment was complete a map showing the staff's geographic distribution was released. If the council makes other large city-centre employers do this sort of thing they really ought to make themselves, as one of the largest.

The Innocent was awful yesterday as Anth said on another thread. There must have been a thaw which allowed bike tyres to leave deep furrows which froze later into tramlines. I came home through Portobello instead and had a friendly encounter with a bus driver who let me through at the pinch point on Brighton Place.

Innocent is beginning to melt for those interested. There were some clear sections and some ultra slippery sections. Folk travelling east to west were able to ride round the side but there was too much vegetation for me to do that. I should think if it stays mild it should be passable by tomorrow-tunnel to Duddingston West anyway.

I passed it coming down Duddingston Park. AS the Holyrood Park was closed I had intended to cut up that way, gentleman on MTB with super-knobblies was coming out and advised me not to be as foolhardy as take the road bike that way, said he had been constantly on the verge of falling over, it was slushy, slow going and very hard work. Looked like he knew what he was about so I took his advice and pushed on up towards Cameron Toll, Dalkeith Road and home.

I don't see why you can't say "X Road between point a and B, multiple potholes creating a serious risk of injury to cyclists" or similar, then if someone is hurt they've been told and have to prove they couldn't have done anything as opposed to didn't know??

That's encouraging.

"and it's received the same blank response."

I've been told that if you want Clarence to 'report back' you have to say so when you report a problem.

However the idea that no-one (not just people on here!) has reported the current (and recent) state of the cycle paths seems hard to believe.

The reality is that almost nothing has been done apart from The Meadows (belatedly and inadequately) and some bits of NEPN.

Clearly 'we' don't think this is good enough, but more importantly I think the past few weeks have shown that giving REAL priority (after the bus routes) to the walk/cycle network would benefit LOT of people.

@ruggtomcat Complaining about the state of the Innocent Path is pretty much an annual event of pointing out the lack of any attempt at making it a rideable and walkable surface, as well as how busy and important a route it is, especially with Edinburgh being made into a model cycling city, followed by sympathetic noises from the council about grit boxes and a big sackful of nothing being done whatsoever.

Haven't reported any gritting errors but I reported seven potholes last night.
The impression I gained from the erratic off-road-north-Edinburgh-path-gritting was that the gritted bit suspiciously overlapped with the bit the police sometimes drive along in order to apprehend miscreant Piltonites.

Gritters were out on the "priority 1" (bus) routes this morning. Plenty black ice on untreated side roads / residential streets, making it all the more neccessary for rat-runners to drive loudly and closely up one's posterior as one took it a bit slowly round corners and over speedbumps. Must have been admiring the new mudguards or something.
