Re: Glasgow Central

London Blackfriars now spans the Thames and has entrances on both sides of the river, so extending GLC similarly to handle longer trains wouldn't be particularly difficult.

The proposed underground rail link seems a bit ludicrous, however. You'd be looking at an even steeper descent into tunnel from Cowlairs (although, admittedly, it's very impressive how the new electric trains pretty much shrug off the climb up through the tunnel when leaving Queen Street), and also quite a steep rise up to track level south of the Clyde (and would you want to connect only to the Paisley lines, or have multiple tunnel exits to connect to any of the others?).

By far the simplest thing to do would just be to build (little construction actually needed) the long-proposed Glasgow CrossRail via Springburn, Bellgrove, Glasgow Cross (with potential interchange to the Argyle Line) and the St Enoch bridge. You could probably easily 4-track the lines around Bellgrove and rebuild it to make it a cross-platform interchange station.

I don't know if there would be track capacity to have some trains do a limited-stop (and reasonably fast?) loop via Bellgrove, Queen Street Low Level, Partick, Anniesland, Maryhill (and vice versa) so that few trains (perhaps only long distance) actually need to terminate at Queen Street High Level?

The Glasgow Connectivity Commission report is far more considered than the media headlines. Lots of deliverable proposals aimed at improving walking, cycling and buses in Glasgow:

https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=45064&p=0

Also some good ideas about funding and governance structures. These require quite a bit of action at a national level, which might not happen - but good to see a local authority support fairly radical proposals.

“

A further £2 million will encourage more people to cycle and walk, particularly children and young people, so that greener travel choices are the norm, helping clean up our air.

Communities are set to benefit from a £23 million investment to rejuvenate cycling and walking across the England.

The England, not just an England. Splicer's disease rampant there.

For a wonderful microsecond I thought it was helmet enthusiast Jesse Rae making transport plans for the England.

Meanwhile, Jesse Norman announces a £23 million fund to rejuvenate active travel in England*.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/23-million-government-funding-boost-to-cycling-and-walking-nationwide

*He actually announced that it was for the whole of the UK, but transport is, of course, devolved.

Central station would be extended across the Clyde to accommodate HS2 trains.

Quite a long way across the Clyde then?

(Glasgow)

May or may not be a good idea, but once again highlights that ‘big money/ideas’ is always about new megaprojects never ‘fix what you’ve got’ or ‘lots of well thought out small measures’ that could make a big difference.
