Even with some flaws it still looks a hell of a lot safer than the current road layout. I imagine cyclists will just use the pelican crossing as a toucan anyway, even if it's not...

@jonty Yes, but if you're cycling in the bike lane and want to turn left then immediately right, but the traffic on your outside wants to go straight on, you'll have to merge through it and into the stream of traffic then turning right. Will be especially hard if everyone is tight together after being stopped.
Oh, if the lights are green when you reach the junction - yes, very true.

The most horrible bit will probably be all the extra traffic from the tram works! Apparently they’re using lots of filter lights so I imagine quite a few will get caught out filtering to the ASL.

I can never tell from these plans if it will be horrible or not.

Even with Picardy Hellscape it's only now they're building it that I can see bits of it are probably not suitable for cycling. I'll need to ride it to be sure.

Boo, just got an email from the project engineer and they've had to remove the toucan/shared use areas due to "pedestrian safety concerns".

They seemed disappointed and mentioned it should be easy to add them in again later. ASLs/lead-ins are the same: https://cycleparking.net/cycle-routes/dukestreet-roundabout.pdf

Obviously the answer is to take primary but usual caveats apply, and makes filtering fairly risky.

Nice conflict point on the turn coming left out of Lochend Road then turning right. I imagine the greens there will be linked, too, so you'll have to merge into a moving stream of traffic.
Not sure I follow? It looks like it's a no right turn out of Lochend Road (based on the left turn arrow) - in which case traffic coming out of Lochend Road on a green light can make it to the right hand lane to turn into Duke Street fairly easily?

Really the central bike lane should just be hatching. Still useful for filtering but doesn't encourage folk to use it when the lanes are moving/avoids abuse.

Latest designs for the junction: https://i1.wp.com/www.leithlinkscc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/IMG_20190701_0003-page-003.jpg

Includes a parallel toucan + shared use section to access Lochend Road from Leith Links and ASLs/decent lead-ins on all approaches.

Apparently future proofed for further cycling infrastructure whatever that may be!

Should anyone else be in the I love Leith Facebook group it's very enjoyable watching the frequent meltdowns about the re-design.

The amount of ‘at least put in ASL’ responses really upsets me

If I were the council reading that, I’d know I don’t need to do anything more to keep 90% happy

"2019. Plans for major changes to a local road junction. No bike facilities on plans. 2019! Makes me want to cry.!"

https://twitter.com/russtofer/status/1129086502447788038

Could anywhere else state that on of the driving forces behind a junction redesign is to improve cyclists safety while providing exactly zero cycling facilities?
