@jdanielp: I never did measure the previous one to make a direct comparison, but I would assume it's slightly shorter.

But the fashion is for MTB frames to have rather slacker geometry these days, so you might find the that two factors cancel out.

I'd have thought that there is so much potential variation in frame geometries between different bikes that it's pretty difficult to arrive at a reliable answer to steveo's question. But urchaidh's approach is the most likely to work for a given bike: wheelbase (i.e. the distance between the front and rear contact patches, often quoted by manufacturers) plus the diameter of one wheel including the width of the tyre.

Yeah thats more what i was worried about 30cm might be a bit much to accommodate. Suppose if I've got it for a few days that'll be the first thing to check.

Whyte give the wheelbase (axle to axle) of my 629 as 1177mm.
A biggish 29" MTB tyre should be about 740mm diameter.
So I'm *guessing* at around 1920mm.

@steveo I bought the 27.5+ from Bike Trax. I didn't take an extended test run, but had several flexible test rides. The 29er came from EBC who were keen for me not to return it muddy despite it being the middle of winter. Not ideal.

my little hardtail is 160cm, should be able to facilitate 15cm with a turn of the bars, they might actually fit together better, currently the handlebars of the mtb are exactly where the saddle of the cdf wants to be.

@jdanielp, bike trax over extended test runs (hires with the cost returned if you buy) so I might end up with them. Probably do couple of hires down at GT too.

The SUNLIT Uplander is 180cm end to end. 40mm tyres and short fork so add another 5cm for safety?

@steveo not sure - I never did measure the previous one to make a direct comparison, but I would assume it's slightly shorter. I certainly feel better around tighter corners on the 27.5+ than I did on the 29er, although it still isn't the most nimble in that regard, but it's amazingly stable.

The mistake that I made with the purchase of the 29er was not spending enough time test riding it, whereas I took the 27.5+ out two or three times (including trying it with a shorter stem) before finally making the purchase.

Cheers unhurt, It'll give me a baseline. I'd rather not have to take my measuring tape to the bike shop.

@jdanielp my current mtb is so old there was only 26" when I bought it, I'm really going to have to have a load of test rides to see what I prefer. Presumably though the 27.5 is shorter than a 29er?

@iwrats, how you feeling?

I can measure the Longitude when I get home, but the geometry on that might mean it's especially lengthy.

I had one but found it rather too long for comfort so ended up selling it on. Having said that, I now have a 27.5+, which could become a 29er, and find that comfortable, although I did have to swap the stem to a shorter option.

Has anyone got a hardtail with 29" wheels they could do me a quick favour.

I need to know the length of one from the leading edge of the front tyre to the very back of the rear.

Reason I'm asking is if quite like a new mtb but my Sisko box is a fixed length and my mtb is a tight squeeze as it is.
