Thanks - neighbour sorted it with the 'soaking' treatment.

My brother had the same problem - in the end he got someone to come round with an angle grinder. Much cheaper than a locksmith, so if you can't get the lock off any other way, I could give you angle-grinder-man's number. Send me a PM if you'd like it.

When my D lock has jammed I had hit with a small rock and tried turning the discs with a paper clip. It’s always been one of the discs inside that that is in the wrong position that caused it to jam. The key would not go right in almost in but not quite think it’s the deepest disk that gets out of position. If oiled it may move more freely so won’t need a to be bumped to turn back to a position the key can be get in. Oiling also get rid of small objects that may stop the discs turning freely. The jammed locks issue I have had are not actually jammed as such it’s just key won’t turn as disk is out of position. I used to keep a paper clip in my wallet but after reading this post notice it is missing so will need to get another, as can prod the mis aligned disc with paper clip then put paper clip away then hit lock side with rock to get to spin disk.

Worth searching for the lock make on YouTube for vulnerabilities (as a general point as well). People like lockpickinglawyer can get through remarkably substantial locks in a few minutes (including top end kryptonites) and it's often using attacks that bypass the lock...

some people don’t oil their chains!

And their lesson will be hard-earned.

“advise your neighbour to lubricate the lock every time they lubricate their chain”

Sound advice to self and neighbours - only flaw being some people don’t oil their chains!

By 'soaking' we mean liberal application, to make sure the internals are 'soaked', rather than immersion (which would be ideal).

Also - advise your neighbour to lubricate the lock every time they lubricate their chain. Just a drop to keep the internals perpetually oily.

Thanks, folks. The bike is locked over at Fountain Park, so I'm not sure about soaking in lubricant. But I will pass on the suggestions about WD40/penetrating oil, and see how she gets on.

As said give the mechanism a copious spraying then jiggle the key while (gently) banging the lock mechanism with the handle of a hammer etc.

Something is stuck and needs persuaded out of the way!

I had a stuck D-lock at work that WD40 didn't shift, so I did another 24 of WD40 and then gave it a soaking with chain lube, and that did the trick.

Step 1) - soak the lock mechanism in penetrating lubricant or WD40 failing that.

Leave for a day and then start working the key around. Let me know how this goes and we'll see if more brutal measures are required.

One of the cyclists in our staircase needs to get a malfunctioning D-lock cut off or otherwise jimmied. Her bike is locked over in Fountain Park.

Any suggestions as to who she should contact?

Thanks,
