(Crime rate recording a bit flaky in first third of last century [i will ignore lead paint])</p> <p>Then there is a boom in motor manufacturing and lead in the atmosphere from the gas. With a parallel boom in crime [with the 23 year lag remember)</p> <p>Up until lead is removed from the gas. So by 1988 the lead is gone but in 2011 the crime rate although dropping is no where near the lower 1960 level.</p> <p>So despite the strong correlation [less strong after lead is removed from gas) the explanation is less straightforward than lead. Even if George monbiot has spotted the link.</p> <p>However Wallpaper did kill you in Victorian Britain.
