New toucan/path are up and running. Also noticed what I think might be the first parallel crossing in Edinburgh?

I noticed today that the new path/toucan has started to be built, presumably the rest of the work in the consultation will be happening too: https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/sfc/quiteroute61-moredunvale-road-to-little-france-dri/supporting_documents/Consultation%20Drawings%20Mar%202018.pdf

there's no cycle improvements due to happen in south Edinburgh

We are cursed.

I mean, we're already being blessed with several thousand new houses with excellent motorist provision (but no resurfacing/sorting out of Drum Street). Why would we need cycle infrastructure too?! (/s)

Two stage crossings are a curse. When there is a commitment not to build more and a plan to remove existing ones then we will know the climate emergency is being taken seriously.

How about an underpass - for the cars of course.

(Added bonus if it got flooded.)

It went to consultation, the consultation was a resounding yes please from cyclists and peds alike (I think only a couple of mild objections to potential whooshing cyclists).

While this was happening, the wee path from Moredunvale Rd to the toucan was fenced off and dug up for flood works. I had hoped they'd somehow manage to do that bit at least since it was already dug up. But obviously they just re-laid the existing path and, better still, it still puddles across its entire width at the slightest rain.

I use that route and just walk across the toucan. It gives the dizzying option to cut 4 crossings down to 3 to reach the shared use at Little France Drive or to take the shared use over towards A&E and just take the road from there.

That's pretty accurate, yeah.

The improvement plans are here: https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/sfc/quiteroute61-moredunvale-road-to-little-france-dri/results/60487449-3.2olddalkeithroadconsultationsummary.pdf

Not in the most readable format, but the gist is that cyclists coming from the east would cross Little France Drive at a new toucan before they get to Old Dalkeith Road, then cut through the edge of the hospital site and then cross Old Dalkeith Road at the toucan crossing just north of Moredunvale Road*. The path between Old Dalkeith Road and Nether Craigour will be widened.

So whilst that's all good, it's not completely obvious that it will make walking the route you took quicker (slightly longer distance with 2 controlled crossings and a zebra versus 4 controlled crossings), so an extra pedestrian crossing on the south side of the junction would still be useful.

*I hadn't realised this was already a toucan crossing, as it doesn't connect to a cycle path on the west side of Old Dalkeith Road.

A toucan is a good option there. From what I'm hearing second hand, there's no cycle improvements due to happen in south Edinburgh, it's central and west Edinburgh that's getting the funding in the short term.

I believe there are plans (currently "on hold") to add a toucan crossing on Old Dalkeith Road there, so I'll try and find out what else is planned at the same time.

I was up visiting family at the time. (I'm based in Ipswich). Happy for you share and raise with appropriate people.

Come to think of it, it's on the the signed cycle route from the Innocent Railway through Greendykes - Moredun and on to Roslin, for people who don't feel safe cycling on the Old Dalkeith Road, especially a right turn near the traffic lights, so they's use this route to cross while pushing their bike or cycling on the pavement.

That's bad. Thanks for documenting so clearly, though.

Despite passing that way a lot, I'd never noticed that there isn't a pedestrian crossing on the south side of the junction.

Have you sent this to any local politicians/the council? Do you mind if I do so?

I was recently up in Edinburgh and found going from the walking and cycling path that goes from Greendykes to Old Dalkeith Road past the hospital to cross over the main road into Moredunvale Road can take 5 minutes with 4 crossings.

Is it any wonder that people don't walk and cycle or adhere to the red man, when it takes so long to cross.
