I'm a bit sad whilst writing this as today is back to work day. However, I have many good memories from the holiday and especially the cycle rides to look back on.

On Friday I did the Ullapool to Inverness ride in roasting hot conditions. The morning started at 20C and it rose to just over 30C by lunchtime. It's a beautiful ride, especially the first part.

I decided to bail out of any notion of cycling on Sat because the forecast was just dreadful. The bike went onto the car roof and I joined the rest of the family driving down the A9 on Fri night.

Watching one of my boys get soaked to the skin at an athletics meet on Sat, I was so happy not to be cycling!

LB - that climb is brutal. I did it a few weeks back and I was just beginning to think this is a nice cycle, when wham this never-ending hill appears!

@ccc - Returning toward Inverness you can have the joy of the Corrieshalloch climb. Did that years ago on return from Barra to Lewis. After the mainly treeless and windy Hebrides it was a pleasant sensory overload.
Tandem with daughter and Mrs LB (before shop though) on her EBC bike wondering why... (!)
(We got train at Garve to Edinburgh - folding tandem of course).

Yes, my family met me in Inverness. Sat was a bit damp so the bike went on the car roof and we all drove to Lewis. (yeah, I was pretty happy with this arrangement!!!)

I'm waiting to see what the weather is like before deciding on my return journey. If favourable I might ride Ullapool to Inverness on Fri, then Inverness to Perth/home on Sat.

@gembo, Barra to the Butt is an incredible ride. Will have to wait until next year now!

@laidback, CCCC only had to make Inverness. The rest of the lewis party were rendezvousing there but looks like the barra to butt of Lewis could be an epic for another day

That was some day ride. Know the Glen Ogle route part of which (near Strathyre) had a bmx (ish) section on it. On a lightweight solo you'd just blast through it for a bit of fun. On our heavier tandem touring rig it was not that popular with the stoker.
Once up above Lochearnhead you can look down on the A85 and be glad you are away from traffic. Some interesting sheep pen gates on section.
Glencoe would be amazing - great morning for photos. Have only cycled from Oban to the Fort. Road (A82?) squeezed towards Corran so we crossed ferry to Morvern and ferried into FW.
As you say the topography as you go through the day may look easier but over 100miles in all hills feel bigger. Good choice to keep eating decent food - it was your holiday and let you see some of the places people go during a hard day's driving.
Q. How many other cyclists did you see?
Q2. Did you get onto Lewis - your original target? Is there another Epic in the making?!

Thanks for asking for advice for me Hank!

It was an amazing adventure, really glad it panned out the way it did.

I've written a summary of the first part on my blog. Check it out here if you want:

A mere 190miles at 17.2mph/27.5kph.

My advice: head for the Tartan Tavern. Especially if George Noble is on the decks.

Make friends with the locals until they offer a sofa for the night. Get early ferry.

Our intrepid @cyclecommute.cc has bravely set off for Oban at silly o'clock today only find his ferry has been cancelled.

Anybody else want to chip in with sage advice to keep cycling until tomorrow's ferry...
