Another alternative might be NCN 1 to Brunstane and the continuation (probably signed the John Muir Way) to Newhailes, pick up NCN 76/JMW at Musselburgh and follow it as far as Appin Drive in Prestonpans. Then take it and Preston Crescent south, to the railway. You can follow paths south over the railway and under the A1 as far as New Road in Tranent.

I think the most traffic-free route would be following NCN 1 to Whitecraig, then NCN 196 to Ormiston, then take the shared use path alongside the B6371 into Tranent.

Total distance is 15 miles.

@chdot - link only works for your "friends", apparently.

With option for train from Brunstane or Musselburgh to Prestonpans.

This very nervy cyclist needs to visit Tranent next week, and I'm wondering if it's possible for me to bike there (from the Meadows) rather than sit on the bus for eternity.

I'm a wreck whenever I have to cycle in traffic, so I'm looking for a route that will stick almost entirely to traffic-free paths or, at most, very quiet streets. Is it possible to make my way to Tranent that way? It looks like all the paths get pretty fragmented after Brunstane, but I'm hoping there's something I've missed! Any advice appreciated.
