If I remember the weather from your Bealach tales correctly it would be quite a grey mural. If the room would suit such a moody wall it would be an awesome result.

Regards the forks, so mine is a 2008 frameset which I bought 2nd hand in 2009 with my stopping smoking money, so it was always on it.

A bit of googling suggests the original forks were Wolf SL, but a number failed so they were recalled and the 3T Funda was what replaced them. Wonder if the word never got out to everyone and some original forks remain?

Mural is an awesome idea, perhaps of the time it went up the Bealach na Bà, though I suspect (know) out of budget...

Looks nice. I think you should be petitioning the house finances to pay for a full scale mural with the bike as part of the scene.

Finally got it up on the office wall, just need to buy some cheap handlebars for it, and a longer bolt and some a spacer of some sort for the front fork.

Also have an idea to paint wheels on the wall, but I may not have the skill to.

Yes, the left chain stay had been worn through, and was weak enough for a hairline crack to form.

I'd noticed the bike had started to develop a speed wobble over 30mph if I was going down hill, and when I took the rear wheel off discovered the crack, and noticed I could squeeze the chain stays together without any real effort.

The wheels pictured were on 28mm tyres, and I had to lift the bike into position to get the picture as the wheel wouldn't turn as it was rubbing (well attached to) on the seat stays, so yes there is very little tolerance for buckled wheels etc. Wheel either runs true or rubs (on 23s).

I think I ran it with 23mm tyres on 'hope hoops' mavic open pros. I'm a big (read fat) lad and the rear wheel used to flex when off the saddle climbing and I think 10,000 + miles of that did the stays in.

Best bike I ever owned, or are ever likely to own again as I can't justify that sort of cost on a bike now with a child.

I was sad to retire it, but I did use it as a commuter for 3 years as I was determined I'd get my monies worth out of it, and also got another 3 years of weekend adventures on it when I bought dedicated commuting bike.

It sits in the garage at the moment, and is at some point going to be highly polished, and ceramic coated, and hung up on the office wall. I just need to engineer a hangarless/invisible mount for it (maybe attaching to wall via dropouts somehow).

Did you say the wheel wore through the seat or chain stay eventually? If so, looking at some old photos, I can see why. It was the opposite of today’s ‘tons of clearance’ trend.

@MB Looks like they have some old S3's kicking about in the store room. The Soloist never had the 3 bottle bolts or a seat tube that was curved round the back wheel, so I still contest that the 'original' soloist is still the prettiest racing bike ever conceived. ;)

I also hope with mass production they have solved the £160 for a new soloist seat post problem. :D

looks nice in the gold though.

Hello all. Big lurker me. I'll be honest, I only created the account because I was desperate to use the Wout Van Aerthur Seat moniker.

I cycle everywhere, but mostly in and about Leith and up into the centre of town for work.

The stuff that really interests me is the infrastructure chat. I also recently attended the COVIDAL mass event that I saw folk on this forum posting about. The chat at the event was that it is going to happen the last saturday of every month (so add to your diary and look out your face mask).

Sure - used to cycle at Uni but fell out of the habit after that. My eldest is 5 and would play around on her pedal bike before but didn't really get into it until lockdown. She can go at some speed now (just went from a Frog 48 to Frog 55) and I wasn't able to keep up on foot any more! My other kid is 3 and mastered her balance bike but isn't quite there on the pedal bike yet. Learning fast though - I think balance bike first is definitely the way to go. I'm very keen for both of them to cycle to school and I think me having a bike too helps normalise that.

We went to the bike station during lockdown and picked up a "decent enough" hybrid for my wife and I to share. We've found it's also helpful for us to pop to the shop for milk/etc on the bike - we can get there and back faster than car by the time you include parking.

Thanks Chris! Long time reader - first time poster here!

I've been a thorn in the side of the council over road safety in South Edinburgh for a few years, primarily campaigning for additional pedestrian safety measures and speed reductions and largely motivated by feeling unsafe pushing prams around busy roads. Kids are a bit older now and have started cycling to/from school so I've got a bike now too and am continuing to push for safer infrastructure.
