Well the stretch by Huntingtower is quite bump but also prone to be very muddy in places. Also someone has put down thick gravel on the part that is their private road and that requires dismounting (at least on 25s). The rest of the route is very nice. We returned via Loch of the Lowes, Stanley and back onto the NCN 77 at Pitcairngreen. Road was pretty busy between Stanley and the A9 but it was worth going down to the Mills.

You can see the new path from the A9. It looks pretty good from Twitter too...

Oh really? That will be why it was closed for a while then. I thought it was just because of a landslip. It was a very frustrating missing link previously. I shall have to go and try it out. Thanks.

Thank you, very useful.

Route 77 is poor between the Hilton and the Tay crossing. I would not recommend that section on a road bike

This was recently upgraded, apparently: "Track upgraded to asphalt in 2019." https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/164220066#map=15/56.5667/-3.6209

That section by Huntingtowerfield is pretty poor but it's not for too long a distance. Not ideal on a road bike, just have to go slowly. The rest is fine though between Perth and Dunkeld as it is mainly just on quiet roads. The section between the B867 and the station at Dunkeld is bumpy in places (tree roots maybe?) but not an issue.

North of Dunkeld, Route 77 is poor between the Hilton and the Tay crossing. I would not recommend that section on a road bike, although it is manageable if you go slowly, just frustrating. After that it is on road to Logierait and is all good. Logierait to Pitlochry via Route 7 is good fun as well.

I've been looking at this recently too, and would also appreciate info from anyone who's been that way (and, indeed, further north) recently.

It's tagged as surface=asphalt the whole way except for two short stretches:

1 km here is tagged as "unpaved". Has a fairly obvious detour if it's road-bike-unfriendly.

Then this bit doesn't have a surface tag. It looks all right from the bits you can see on Google Street View though.

Has anyone been on this route recently and what is the surface like? Okay for narrow tyres?
