@ Trixie

Vibram do a “maxi grip” sole which works much better on (British) wet rock

I always look for that

I pretty much live in Karrimor walking shoes and boots. I have an old foot injury and they give me the best support for the least £. Word of warning - the soles are great for all-natural surfaces but can be dangerous as heck on wet concrete or tile. They lose all traction.

Some of the Karrimor stuff is not bad at all. Vibram soled boots and shoes are decent for the price. Even some of the non-Vibram stuff is okay: maybe not suited for Munro bagging but fine for a wee jaunt in the Pentlands.

I bought some Gelert walking boots earlier this year they spilt within 3 months and only one 20 mile walk. I assumed all the sports directs brands were rubbish.
I bought Karrimor Vibram sole boots 3 days ago and seem much better for £50 someone said the karrimor are better, the cheapest vibram sole boots I have seen, even decatherlon my normal go to store charges £75 for vibram sole boots. May be some sports direct stuff is not just cheap and bad.

"THe current Bavelaw Castle owner has put a path in from Beech Avenue all the way to the top of West Kip."

Actually walked the lower part of this path last month en route to Hare Hill. It's a. resurfacing plus improved drainage of the so-called Red Road using grey aggregate chips which means it's not red anymore: Grey Road? They were still building it and passage was, shall we say a bit challenging.

However in the torrential rain the morning after our camp the old Red Road was pretty much impassable due to flooding. The new section was fine due to good drainage.

New path not very "wild" looking but on balance probably an improvement. Guy in JCB said we were part of only a few people who had nice things to say about his work, most folk complaining apparently.

"trendy and upmarket"

Having recently visited Sports Direct at Fort Kinnaird to purchase a volleyball for No.1 son, I can say with some certainty these are not attributes I would ascribe to that particular outlet. Was also in Sports Direct Argyle Street Glasgow branch over the summer, looking for running shoes (again for No.1 son). If you only want Nike or Adidas, you're sorted. Otherwise very little choice. This seems a change from a year ago (last time I visited) when other brands better represented (Asics, Karrimor, Reebok, etc.). Other brands still there but mostly tokenistic presence. Not good for consumer choice.

Assuming the stoves are the same as two listed on the Karrimor website I'd give the bigger one a miss as it looks like there is no pre-heat loop.

Another £20 would get you this:
https://www.alpkit.com/products/koro

(which is the same weight as the smaller Karrimor stove)

buckets were out catching leaks in the curious formal menswear section that is not accessed from the other menswear sections

THe Family who owned it used to own Bavelaw Castle. THe current Bavelaw Castle owner has put a path in from Beech Avenue all the way to the top of West Kip. A dietician I know who is a very keen Mountain biker is complaining. Still the Sick Kids (where the dietician cycles to of a morning) has been moving to Little France (a bad place to cycle to) for more than a decade and still not gone - so you cant hAVE EVERYTHIng

Ok

That’s interesting.

Previous to that it was characterised as ‘for Morningside ladies’.

Used to have a good toy department (before ToysRus).

Also known for its big Christmas tree with mechanical bird.

Not sure I’ve been inside this century!

In the coming years people will probably consider sports direct of today how Jenners was regarded a couple of decades ago. So get in on the ground floor and tell your grandkids what it was like back in the day.

I'm going to go but I don't know why?

I have a rubber hammer which I acquired in September 2014 during an escapade on Arthur's Seat. It belongs to a lovely guy who has vanished but his name came up on Saturday. I expect to see him again soon enough and I might even give it back.

Afternoon campers

Bit of a half price sale if you can find the camping bit - near top of shop

Mostly Gelert and Karrimor brands

e.g. £50 Karrimor stove for £25 - very small. £25 Karrimor stove for £12.50 - think the gas must sit under or with a tube?? The Gelert one came in a suitcase £12.50 Not for bike camping.

Lot of their walking shoes and boots with money off

I bought a 500ml flask and a 1 litre flask

Lot of dry sacks and tent pegs and a big screw in anchor. Rubber hammers 2 for £4

If anyone is in the market for two rubber hammers

Looks to me like they decided to go for a camping section and nobody bpought anything as Who knew it was there?
