I'm intrigued to know how the Chalmers Buildings have been affected by the explosion. When I walked past the back of the building on Monday night I noticed that a new path had been created, presumably for the residents to gain access to their properties whilst avoiding the street closure.

The road is completely closed (I think the building is quite unstable. Bits of it are being pulled down.)

I noticed that a common way around for pedestrians and cyclists alike is to use the footway linking Semple St and Port Hamilton and then onto Loudons/Akva.

It was no pedestrians on Monday night so cut round the back of the building that has Loudons on the corner of it.

EDIT: someone has just checked the website for the restaurant and it's closed anyway so we are replanning!

The council roadworks website says that the road and footway are closed. Does anyone who's been through the area know if that means no pedestrians able to walk even down the other side of the road? What's the best diversion?
(Some friends and I are meeting up on Friday evening for dinner at Maki & Ramen just opposite Evans and not sure if we need to get complicated about how to get there).

Does anyone else remember the house at the top of Riselaw Crescent, that was destroyed in a gas explosion in about 1980? I have very vague memories of a few white-painted walls left standing, and an excavator sitting in the middle of what was by then a pile of rubble.

The rumour was that a faulty doorbell was the source of ignition.

My neighbours managed to set their flat on fire several years ago, fortunately without any direct casualties - my flat and contents were smoke damaged, but cleaned up relatively quickly on my insurance, while the stairwell spent the best part of the year covered in soot until someone working for the flat that was burnt out managed to get all of the individual insurance companies to work together to have it cleaned and repainted. All of that was fairly horrendous to deal with, but I can't even begin to imagine what this must be like for everybody affected :(

Turns out that someone I know lived in one of the other flats in the block. The good news is that they were not in their flat at the time. The bad news is that the flat was gutted and they've lost everything.

I don't know them that well. I can't imagine being left with just the clothes you stand up in. Stuff can be replaced, but not things that have sentimental value.

Saw the smoke and heard the sirens last night when Dr Bike were tweaking my tricross at Boroughmuir. Looks like the roads are closed as the buildings may have structural damage. No report yet if anyone in the flat. Block next to Tollcross primary which is shut today.
