@Frenchy yes unless there is a white taxi parked on double yellows further down at the dropped kerb taking you on to the meadows path. Which there was.

Today i was driven at by a van coming out of Allan Park heading for the codfather/dominos. If only i had my lights on the driver would have seen me. Oh wait, yeah I did have my lights on, made no difference. Straight into the yellow box he went perpendicular to direction of the other vehicles including me and there he stayed until some seconds later the lights changed and he could leave the box.

There is of course no way of identifying drivers who are corrected in their rubbish manoeuvres by bike lights. I think small per cent. I think a bigger per cent just cant see and drive badly all the time and then i think a bigger per cent do see you or at least the car behind you.

Driver tried to right hook me at the Riccarton Arms junction this morning. Even though I had gone for the staring them in the eyes, I was a bit far away, think I better start running lights during daytime, Oh wait I did have my lights on this morning as it was a bit dull

Slowing down and stopping pedalling until they had stopped turning right was what I did

Lot of bad driving, bad cycliong and bad pedestrians in the light rain this morning

Unless it was an April Fool, wasn't there a potential thing where Volvos would warn their drivers of nearby cyclists using the appropriate app, or vice versa?

I seem to recall an earlier discussion where someone said all new cars must know have DRLs.

As said above this is addressing the symptom and risks opening the door to victim blaming. Well we see a future where bikes are required to have DRLs and if so will they also have a radar ping broadcast to all nearby robots?

i use daytime lights in a car all the time--the human eye sees light, then movement, then colour. lights can give oncoming drivers several extra seconds of reaction time.
so on a less than optimum day, i'm happy to have them on my bike--especially in the rain. it's less for drivers and more for other cyclists, as i'm often on the paths and i notice how many of us have our heads down in the rain.

"My usual lights have a day mode (bright double flash every so often) - no idea if they help but I’d like to think they might be useful at catching people’s eye at roundabouts/junctions"

i think i've seen these, and they're really weird. i noticed it the first time because i thought there was a bike heading towards me at dusk, and then it disappeared--on a path! suddenly, very near me, the light flashed again. i've seen these since, and find the gap between flashes counter-intuitive and difficult to guage how far away the light source is.

I see enough drivers who clearly have the sun in their eyes to keep my dynamo lights on all the time now. It's slightly sobering to realise how invisible even a car is, if you're squinting at it into the glare, especially if the road is wet. No substitute for drivers ensuring they can see properly, obviously, but with a hub dynamo it's no noticeable additional effort for me (in fact it's a tiny bit more effort to turn them on and off all the time).

I drive all vehicles with lights on , 24/7 they work ! If the light changes for an unforeseen ( no joke) reason, such as a shadow on a tree lined road then the light makes a difference !!

Daylight running lights do seem to be becoming "a thing". I was thinking about this the other day. At first I thought "they must work, after all I did see them." Then I thought "...but then I've never NOT seen a cyclist while out on the road during daylight (or darkness)".

They aren't for me, but if daylight running lights are what it takes for someone to feel safe enough to saddle up then I say good luck to them.

It was a lot simpler in the 1970s, the lights then could only be seen at night - PIFCO, Everready etc. People had to look in the daytime?

No one looks anymore?

Putting lights on to ameliorate this addresses the symptom but not the problem.

Today was dull/foggy so OK, but Saturday was bright and clear and I saw a couple of people with lights on (one in peloton) other on own

I have used front and rear flashing lights 24/7 year round for years. Just do.

I have only ever been hit deliberately.

This morning was a thick pea souper, so the spokes lights went on too. Princes Street commuters must've thought the Xmas parade had come early.

My car has day running lights. But I don't approved of them (I don't think I can turn them off). It puts those with such lights at a disadvantage, such as pedestrians.

I have a bontrager day time light I use. I'm not sure that I notice any difference from drivers, but I quite like how I just put it on whatever the conditions. Perfect for a dull morning where a normal light wouldn't be bright enough.

Seriously wondering these days if an eyesight check is still part of the driving test! If it is dull I usually put my very bright light on flash in the hope that drivers will actually see me and give way!

In the last year they have become much more prominent.

Same as cars now being driven in day time with lights on

This used to be pointless as the lights did not show up. But now with the super bright lights you can see them,

Will this help the unobservant be observant?

Will judges now be asking in trials where poor cyclist has been driven into Was the cyclist sporting day time lights?
